What is your opinion on tipping ?
My friend and I were talking and she is very adamant about not tipping the owner of a company who does a service for her (hair/nails). I don't agree with her but when I asked other people, they felt the same way my friend did. I think if someone does a service for you, regardless of who they are, they deserve a tip.
So.. just curious what other people's opinions are on this.

What is your opinion on tipping ?
I think it depends on the service and where the service is done. I usually tip everyone.

What is your opinion on tipping ?
I tip everyone because half the time I don't know who the owner is anyway.

What is your opinion on tipping ?
I had gotten my nails done over the weekend and one of the owners did them (the guy i usually go to had another customer) Gave her the same tip as if i were to give to my normal nail guy. My dad gets his hair cut by the owner and he gives the guy a tip also.

It varies. When I got my hair done at someone’s home I gave a small tip but if it’s a salon with overhead I give 20%.

Re: What is your opinion on tipping ?
I tip the lady who cuts my hair and she is the owner, same with my previous hair stylist. I would feel funny not tipping.

What is your opinion on tipping ?
I would still tip. Just because they are owner what is the difference? They are actually doing more work by performing the service plus running the business. They deserve a fair tip as well...

What is your opinion on tipping ?
owners of salons, restaurants or any business should never accept a tip. Its poor manners and poor business since they keep the full amount. I know a salon owner and an owner of a garage and they always refuse tips. They say they are the owners tips are for employees. I tend to agree and agree with your friends op

Yes, this completely. Owner's should not accept tips, poor etiquette.
That said, I would still offer a tip because I find people just don't care anymore. I know several owners of businesses that accept tips and would probably think you're the tacky one if you don't tip them.

Re: What is your opinion on tipping ?
I think people should be tipped accordingly to the quality of service they provide. You do a good/great job, you should be tipped. I don't think being an owner or employee has anything to do with it.
The business owner is not necessarily making a huge profit on their service and would most likely appreciate the tip. The small business owners that I know don't live in houses on the water or drive luxury cars (obviously, there are exceptions). The "profit" they make often goes to rent, taxes, insurance, etc. and their take home is probably more modest that most people think.

A business run from a home still have overhead expenses and normally their lower prices compensate for the lower overhead. I run a business from my home and while I may not pay rent, I still have numverous overhead expenses that I incur because of my home based business.

If that is the case, the prices of services should reflect that overhead- they shouldn't be depending on a tip to cover their overhead.

Isn't that the case for all businesses. That prices reflect overhead. Yet we still tip in those other businesses. All pricing should reflect overhead expenses and no business should rely on tips to pay their bills.

We tip in the other businesses because the girl doing my hair in the salon is not getting the profits from said salon. Or the waitress bringing me my food or the bartender making me my drinks. It's different when you are the owner. And I do tip my hair lady who works out of her house- but my DH often asks me why. And I really don't have a good answer other than I feel weird not doing it. I would rather charge $5 or 10 more for a service to make sure I cover myself if I had my own business- than rely on tips which may or may not come.

Guess I am different. I don't tip people to cover their overhead. I tip them for a job well done. A tip is a reward for a job well done, not a right or expectation. I don't care if you own the business or not. I am either going to tip or not based on the level of service you provided me. Not on a foundation of if I don't tip you can't cover overhead.

This too. If you are relying on tips to cover your overhead you are not running a business correctly.
