So I have decided to not participate in the cookie swap, the gift swap or yet another food pantry collection ... and I don’t feel guilty about it at all!!!!!!

Good for you!!!!

I totally understand not participating in the gift and cookie swap, but I don’t see the harm in giving a canned food item. I get that you do your own charitable things but it is the season to be extra nice and charitable if you can. I don’t see the trouble in taking a can from your pantry and helping out with a food drive. I feel like this a little bit “Grinchy” - sorry.

My jobs go over the top with things to do and events during holiday, so I get it. For Halloween there was a pumpkin carving contest, be on the Halloween float in the city, and some other happy hour things. I didn’t participate in any of it but any time it’s helping for a charity or someone in need - I always do.

Re: am I being a grinch?

I don't think you are being a Grinch, that is a lot.

This year I have felt the same as you, not so much at work (a pot luck, $20 grab bag, giving campaign-no one does kid fund raisers) but with every other organization we are a part of. I have 3 kids in 3 different schools. 3 after-care programs, boy scouts, 2 religion classes, sports, they all had collections for thanksgiving, now they are all doing collections for Christmas, plus we donated a full meal with the church for thanksgiving and now there is an angel tree. So that is like 25 different donations over the last month. I feel terrible complaining, because I know we are blessed and so many don't have alot, but we are in no way rich and all of this adds up.

Re: am I being a grinch?

I thought of this thread when I got an invite last night to an Ugly Sweater Luncheon in my office.
I refuse to spend money on an ugly item of clothing.
If I'm spending money it's going to be on something flattering that I love to wear.
I'll be hitting the decline button on that one.
I don't agree with asking people to spend money to wear something. It's not right.
It's not like saying- wear red or wear something festive. At least then you can dig something up that you already own.
I don't own ugly sweaters. Nor do I feel comfortable purposely being ugly all day. No thanks.

Do what you want and don't feel too bad about it. The food pantry and toy drives are good causes, however, as pointed out, there is a lot of redundancy between, work, kids schools, churches, scouts, other activities. We do it at school and the angel tree at church, but i've skipped at work and I'm sure someone thinks I'm a grinch.

On the potlucks, cookie swaps and gift exchange.... Only you know how it is at your office. I'm not a fan of a real cookie swap, that is work and do you really wannt to have everyone's cookies from work?
A dessert pot luck kinda thing I cna get on board with. On these office events if most people participate in some fashion and you don't, you're a bit of a grinch. Its a social activity that there are plenty of ways to cheat a bit to get it done easily. Bottle of liquor or wine for the gift swap and if you don't want to go out and get it, you probably have some around your house you can regift.

I went to one of these parties once, and the best sweater was $0. The person printed out on regular paper bad pictures of everyone at the party and taped them to her sweater. It was the biggest hit and hilarious

Re: am I being a grinch?

So just to update:

Our holiday party was the other day. I did participate in the gift swap thing - just did it to keep the peace. I did not participate in the cookie swap thing or the third collection for the food pantry.

I had already gotten several toys for the Toys For Tots box before I posted this as well as donated to the two charities.

Today's shake down emails:

1. Everyone should contribute $20 to yet a third charity that one of the partner likes.

2. There's raffle tickets for sale for a weekend getaway ski house (with lift tickets for 4) for the low price of $15 per ticket for someone's kid's sports team

3. There's raffle tickets for a "basket of cheer" for someone's kid's dance school.

All before 2 pm. I literally just keep hitting delete.

Honestly, that shit shouldn't be allowed at the office.
It's unprofessional.
It's a place of employment not a place to solicit donations and fund raise.
I really think HR departments need to crack down on this type of thing.
It can put people in an uncomfortable situation and it's inappropriate.
It should certainly not be done using company email either.
If the company wants to chose a charity to support AS A COMPANY that is fine. But all these people with their person requests for charities and fund raisers for their kids, NOPE!
