While I am doing all the restrictions, I do think it's an over reaction. The group of people who would get very ill from this illness is the same grouping of people who would get very ill from getting the flu or any other virus out there. With closing everything, I really don't see an end in sight. How do you know when it's "safe" to come out. Unless they test every single person they will never know if the virus has been contained. I think we are going down a slippery slope and feel really bad for our small businesses and those who need to work at those businesses not getting paid for however long this takes.
I agree. I'm seeing our schools asking everyone to disinfect and sanitize all backpacks, lunch boxes, etc with Clorox. While I don't disagree that cleanliness is important, the fact is that the virus doesn't live on surfaces for that long. Not only that but there have been no confirmed cases in or around this district. People need to stop acting like this is the black plague. We do not need to disinfect every single thing we own with bleach.
Bleach will destroy fabric. You might as well throw it out and buy new if you are going to use bleach on anything. Or burn it. Just burn it.
I know. It's like common sense has gone out the window. I saw a mom in our local FB group telling people that if you have to leave your house, you should strip down immediately upon returning home and sanitize everything. I just don't know what to say anymore. There is no talking sense into people. They think fresh air is going to kill them. I wish I was making this up. I don't even know if the media is to blame for this or if people were just born this stupid.
Maybe she means if you’ve gone into a busy store or otherwise had close interactions with people? I personally wouldn’t take it this far but I don’t think she’s TOTALLY crazy if that’s what she means.
The head of the CDC said to not wear outside shoes in your house, and to have inside clothing, so I am not sure it is insane. I am going to wash all coats, backpacks, and lunchboxes after finishing the laundry today.
So we need to wash our winter coats everytime we go outside?

I also think the statement that it only fatally effects a certain group of people may be inaccurate. Did you see the images of the obits in Italy? Scary stuff.
What do you mean by this?
I just read an article that stated that the average age of fatalities in Italy is 81 years old and 2/3 of them had 3 or 4 pre-existing health conditions. Do you think this is not accurate?
I'm concerned that might not be accurate. I have heard about people in their 40's and 50's too that were "healthy". I mean, IDK because I'm not there and I have not seen this on a news source (so I probably should not be saying it on a website and causing alarm - sorry about that) but I am starting to worry that we have been minimizing who can get effected. On the other hand there are people who have it and don't even know about it so IDK. I think I'm getting in my head. And now yours. LOL My apologies.
TBH I'm not even remotely worried. It sounds like Italian officials WANT to scare everyone else into acting quickly. If they had facts to back up a higher mortality rate, or the fact that young and healthy adults are dying, without a doubt they would be putting them out there. Very few people under 50 have died from this in Italy. At this point I would not worry that they're hiding information like that.
I'm not really worried either. I've taken my normal precautions in washing hands, wiping down surfaces, etc. I'm not going to quarantine myself, which is what everyone else seems to suggest. I don't think people understand social distancing vs. quarantine.

Overreacting
I think so many people already have it with no real symptoms. It would almost make more sense to quarantine the at risk population (less than 20%) to limit their exposure. I know this would be a logistical nightmare, but it seems we’re already in a logistical nightmare, which is affecting 100% of the population and I feel like many aren’t following the guidelines.

Agree.
And side note, I did wash DD's coat after we left the playground yesterday. However, it is thought that soft surfaces aren't a huge concern.

Overreacting
I am still seeing people complaining about overrreacting and flaunting what they're doing. They are on the wrong side of history, selfish, and in denial. I am disgusted. CNN is talking about a tipping point now. They cancelled the SAT in May. I hope all these people have had great manicures and bar nights. We have known about aymptomatic transmission for a while now. I hope this was worth it.

Yup. Just a few examples I've seen:
Saw a post earlier from a Spring Breaker in NOLA on the beach. With the caption "coronavirus isn't going to kill my vaca vibe"
Someone else talking about putting together a potluck dinner party tonight with friends.
Another person asking what the consequences are to keep a bar open. Saying we don't have enough cops to enforce all the closures.
ETS: All these SpringBreakers still need to get home.
And then you the President doing a news conference today with everyone standing on top of each other. So much for the social distancing. Great example. No wonder people are having a time believe everything.

This makes sense. yes.
Makes TOTAL sense. And to further this. If you look on the WHO website, which shows realtime statistics. The percentage of people dying in Italy is the highest of any country. Because their population is so old (amongst other things there). Not a bad idea to isolate the 55 and over population

Speaking of manicures, I have never seen more "can i still get my gel manicure?", "are nail places safe?", "i need a fill in...help me" posts on fb in my life. Its crazy how superficial people are being right now.

I have a friend that's a hairstylist and her salon closed. She's terrified b/c she'll have no income and she doesn't get sick time. She's reached out to our local single parents group and asked if anyone wants their hair done, she'll travel to them. A bunch of people have asked for haircuts and coloring (although they might reconsider when they find out how expensive she is). While I think it's nice that people are helping her out - she's going to be in direct contact with too many people for me to feel comfortable being around her until it all dies down.

I got my pedicure on Friday and I’m not sorry. I’m glad they were able to get some revenue. My hair done too, my lady works for herself and supports her family. I can’t imagine what this will do. And if she can do my hair this week I will fully go and support her.
They closed malls here in Bergen county, now people can be happy. That big American Dream mall is shutdown. But the many guys who are now laid off from my DHs job aren’t happy. These closing are hurting a lot of people’s livelihood. A majority of these workers are the sole providers for the household.

I feel horrible, horrible for those people. Awful. I'm not afraid of the virus, i'm afraid of what it's doing to people's livelihood. This virus will always be around. They aren't going to kill it off completely in 30 days or 45 days or 90 days or a year So then what- are we locked in our homes for the rest of our lives?
What about the next new bug that comes around?

I was horrified reading some of the comments on a Newsday article of the person who just passed from COVID-19. Because they were 96. The gist was basically, "Well they were 96." My grandmothers are in their 80's and I would be absolutely devastated if this illness was passed to them and contributed to their death. Devastated.
People are not looking at the bigger picture. If this is not contained it will overwhelm the hospitals. Doctors will have to choose who lives and who dies because their aren't enough ventilators. And not just for COVID-19. For the flu, for heart attacks, for pneumonia. The death toll will be beyond just those with this illness.
This should not have been brushed off. There should have been leadership and planning from the beginning. A plan in place that SHOULD this get bad, here is how we are going to handle it. It is absolutely going to be terrible for our economy. There is so much uncertainty. It has the same feeling as Sandy did.

The hope is that if people actually listen, we will only have to do this for a short while. If people don't listen, and this thing spreads like wildfire, then the social distancing measures and closures will go on longer and the damage to the economy will be much worse.

I'm not afraid of the virus either. I'm pretty sure that if I got it, I'd recover like from any cold or flu. What I am afraid of is overwhelming our hospital system - and not having the resources to care for "regular" medical needs, much less those who do get seriously ill from this virus. I know first hand how thin hospital resources get stretched from a bad flu season. This has the very real potential to make it VERY difficult to get needed hospital and medical treatment

I understand all that. But here is my confusion. So we distance for 2 months let's say. Shut everything down. It slows down enough to not "overwhelm the system" Then we all come out of hiding and everything opens again. And we start passing it around again. Doesn't the system start to get overwhelmed yet again???

Or close it to the public and let them still do their job. So the average working person can still do his job and get paid. People are still working or going into work as well being able to wfh. Why can’t they let this industry work in limited groups. It bullsh!t to me.
I can go donate blood, which I think is essential and important but they can’t go to work off hours at these places? I’m more likely to contract or give this virus by donating blood then a few construction workers working on a site. I just feel like they aren’t really thinking about the impact of these closures. They are just shutting things down without looking for other solutions.

Yes this has me baffled because they don’t work on cures, they work on vaccines. And when the vaccines does come out the next debate will be about whether someone should take it or not.
In 3 months are people who get sick from it are not going to need to go to the hospital? What magical pill is going to stop this? I just see the economy and the world going to crap right now.

Re: Overreacting
I think we should just get it over with and go on lockdown for 2 weeks to reduce the spread. I feel like we are just delaying it and we will soon be like Italy on lockdown anyway once the numbers start to climb even more. They can only leave their house to buy food pretty much. And even then I saw that when they wait in line they have to stay 6 feet apart from one another.
