NY School Closure, can someone confirm?

So I just wanted to verify, based on Cuomo's latest announcement, are all NYS schools closed until April 1? The latest thing I heard before that was the County Executives on LI shut schools down for two weeks beginning yesterday.

Someone posted on Facebook that NY schools may be closed through Halloween. Did anyone else hear this? I can’t believe this.

I was told (nyc) prepare for possibly not coming back this school year and that there is a chance not until December.

I want to cry. I'm so sad for my babies that I didn't say goodbye to. I feel like I'm abandoning my classroom. I'm overwhelmed by the prospect of online teaching. I'm wondering how I'm going to give my OWN kids the education they deserve too.

I'm especially sad for the seniors who are possibly missing all those events, like 5th grade dances, class trips, PROM!!!! High school seniors especially... Ugh... i know it's not the worst thing ever but it still sucks.

2-3 weeks...i was ok with.
2-3 months, maybe more? I'm scared.

I haven't seen or heard this
I've heard end of the school year.

Where did you hear / see this?

ETS: When the news is reporting closed till the end of the year. I assumed the school year. Not the calendar year.

I haven't heard anything that excessive.
But if anything that excessive is true, I would 100% rather take my chances with this virus. because life really is not worth living anymore if we have to live like this for a year.
That's insane

Yep. I'd rather have people get the virus and most likely recover than that. You can't make people live like that for that long. Over something like this.

I agree but was afraid to say it out loud. I've been thinking about this since the stockmarket started taking a hit. It's happened in the past. I don't want to sound as if money is more important. But people are going to loose everything. Look at what is/was happening with the taxi drivers.
I'm scared for a lot of people and not just because of the virusChat Icon

I think it's a complete over reaction to shut down the schools for that long. It's crazy. This is not a deadly virus. Media love to promote the panic.

Here's a little perspective with numbers:

There are approximately 7,637,355,300 people in the world. Approximately 204,610 worldwide, people have been diagnosed with the virus- not died, diagnosed.

There are approximately 329,408,300 people in the US. Approximately 4,226 people have been diagnosed with the virus- diagnosed not died.

I got those number this morning so they may have changed slightly.

It’s up to 6,519 in the US. I use this map to look at the stats. Johns Hopkins Interactive Map

People LOVE the panic. I think it makes them feel important. Sitting on FB (or here) all day yelling at the people that have to leave their homes.

Something I find to be very interesting: The people that are advocating for everyone to stay home and self-quarantine, are the ones that love to sit around and accuse others of being privileged. They make every political topic about privilege and how if you don't agree with them you are a privileged asshole. Now carona is here and they are the first to tell people to stay the f**k home. It must be nice that they are all able to stay home and self quarantine. I guess they don't realize how privileged they are to be able to do that. People have to work, small businesses have to open. If no one orders take out, restaurants are going to close. The world can't shut down. People have bills to pay. Maybe they aren't shutting off utilities now, but at some point that money has to be paid or they will shut them off. They aren't talking about forgiving debt, they are talking about postponing the inevitable. A lot of families already live paycheck to paycheck. They won't be able to make that money back, leaving them in debt.

100% agree. and yes- they aren't forgiving debt, etc people will still have to pay it. It must be nice to have the luxery of sitting at home and not have any worries and judging others

December?? That's insane. I was praying that they could at least go back after April 1. I also think people are overreacting to all of this and it was here long before anyone knew, and now we just have tests. Think of how many people this will affect. People can't pay their bills if they can't work or run their business.

This!! I have been crying for the last 3 days, Im going crazy with the thoughts of the unknown. I feel sad for my kids missing out on the end of the year stuff, they are young only K, 1st and 2nd grade so I know that they dont care. I fear for my sanity and the pressure to teach them at home. I feel like there is no end to this and when I hear home till the end of the school year I freak out internally. I went out today to the teachers store, 5 Below and the pizza place. My 5 year old was crying because there was all this black tape on the seats of the pizza place, we had to stand behind a line and it was so quiet. We both left crying that we hate this virus. I understand that it is serious but still we can't live like this 6 months.

New CDC data shows that 38% of patients hospitalized for the Coronavirus in the US are between the ages of 20-54.

I hate living like this. I dislike working from home and hate my kids missing so much school... but I do feel like this is necessary. What happens if we (ages 20-54) are sick enough to require hospitalization but there aren’t enough beds? People get sicker and sicker and suffer longer, although they have a greater chance of survival in that age range. Those are the kinds of decisions and circumstances they are trying to avoid.

They are making it seem like we are all gonna die with what they are doing. People are gonna start calling 911 every time they ******* sneeze. I’m not saying let’s ignore this thing but it’s a lot to take mentally. Better safe than sorry I guess

Those numbers sounds scarier than they are. That amounts to 193 people 20-54 who are hospitalized. Across the entire US.

They did not account for pre-existing conditions. 20-54 is also a gigantic range. I'd bet the majority are on the extreme end of the range and have pre-existing conditions.

If more and more younger people are hospitalized, the more elderly people will be without care. Like in Italy, doctors will need to pick and choose and they will always pick the youngest/healthiest to save.

Not saying that isn't terribly sad, but it's reality.

NY School Closure, can someone confirm?

Some states have already cancelled school for the rest of the year. We are only three days into this and I’m losing my mind. I’m a HS teacher who is trying to teach Kindergarten while simultaneously teaching biomedical science to 9th graders. My son can be a stage 5 clinger. He will not leave me alone. It’s different when we’re able to go out and do things, but there’s only so many times we can walk our neighborhood. I walked 6 miles today and 4 miles yesterday in addition to my regular workout.... PLUS i feel like this lapse in schooling will negativity affect him for the rest of his life. I’m totally overwhelmed by all of this. Luckily my HS students are highly motivated and are working well with me to complete the necessary content. I will say online teaching is very challenging. I want to be back in the classroom.

This is rough

I’m about to start doing teletherapy for an entire caseload doing back to back sessions for the duration of my school day so 8-2:20 with 50 min for lunch and 45 min prep.

While teaching my fourth grader everything he needs and giving him the support he needs

While teaching my kindergartener everything he needs

While keeping my three year old from treating every day like wrestlemania

Good times
