When you travel internationally...
And someone asks where you're from, do you say you're American or do you say you're from New York?

When you travel internationally...
I don't travel internationally, but my brother does a lot. He said people are more impressed and treat you better when you say you're from NY

I have at a border crossing in Namibia. I gave my NY license instead of my German license. They had no idea where NY was. I mentioned the US, and the guard still had no clue. He said South America? So, yes, there are people who have no clue where NY is.
I always say I’m from NY, but it depends on the country I’m visiting because I have residency in other countries. I just want to give up my US passport because I have lived half my life outside of the US, but that costs thousands of dollars to give up my US passport. But I think I am going to do it in the next two years.

Really? Why does it cost so much to give up a passport?
I always say I am from NY too.

I can’t answer your question exactly. Expats are required to do their tax return every year. We also have to fill out our FBAR.
The limit of paying taxes is usually about ~90,000. If you make more than that, then you have to pay tax. $90K is not much.I also have to report any accounts outside of the US (FBAR form). I have too many accounts to mention.
That’s just the way it is. But I don’t want to pay this “fine”. I just want to get my German citizenship and call it a day. I have no assets in the US. It’s a complete mindfuck.

Re: When you travel internationally...
I was in Turkey for a while...I would always say...”I’m from America...NY”. They know NY, but geographically they don’t really know where NY is in the U.S. They never heard of Long Island though lol

Re: When you travel internationally...
I taught English at a middle school in Europe for a while. My students thought it was so cool that I was from New York.

I don't think I've ever said I'm American. Always have said New York; and that includes places as far as South Africa.
