The Truth About Pet Food
This is a VERY informative article and well worth the read. It's a bit long, but I guarantee you that it will open your eyes to a lot of things.....
Truth About Pet Food
Edited to suggest some premium food brands. These foods might be higher in price, but think of the long-term effects for your beloved pet
Canidae Wellness Innova Merrick Orijen Solid Gold Flint River Ranch Timberwolf Organics
(These are just what I can think of off the top of my head - there are more out there)
There is a great store in Wantagh called Animal Appetites that carries almost all of these foods. They are very knowledgeable and can help you find the right food for your pets needs.

Re: The Truth About Pet Food
When I got my kitten, the vet said "you might want to do your research and see what food you want to feed him." She told me to think about upgrading (I was giving him Purina kitten chow)
when I was doing my research I found articles similar to this one about what is really in pet foods. It's amazing really what these companies are portraying as nutricious food for our animals!
While I have always had cats growing up who were fed these typical foods, I decided to give my Midnight ** Pet Promise Pet Food ** They state....
* No animal byproducts, those secondary slaughterhouse products that are not generally consumed by humans - such as lungs, spleens, brains, blood, beaks, feet and feathers.
* No added growth hormones that make farm animals grow more quickly.
* No antibiotic-fed protein. Antibiotics are routinely used on factory farms where overcrowded conditions can promote disease in animals; our sources raise their livestock and poultry in a humane manner.
* No rendered meats such as beef, chicken, or byproduct meals. Rendering is a high-temperature process to separate protein and fat that uses slaughterhouse scrap, as well as animal tissue from dead, dying, diseased, or disabled animals.
* No factory-farm meat or poultry tells you we're committed to providing your pet with exceptional nutrition that comes from pure protein. Supporting rural farms by using locally and regionally raised animal protein sources helps keep our natural environment and our rural communities healthy and vibrant.
* No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Such additives are unnecessary when a pet food delivers sound nutrition with great taste.
They have dog and cat food and I usually buy mine in Stop and Shop or Petco!! Just another healthy option !!

Where are you in Suffolk? Pet Supplies Plus stores usually carry some high end foods such as wellness or you can usually find them in the smaller pet stores.

Re: The Truth About Pet Food
I didn't read that article but I am very well informed about commercial pet food, which is why I refuse to feed it to my cats and started making my own food.
I used to make my own cat food because of this. Cats especially are more at risk because they are pure carnivores and most commercial cat food is mostly grain.
I feed Innova Evo dry food, and for wet mine love the Wellness pouches. I also feed them the Merrick cans, and my own homemade ‘wet food’ but they love the Wellness pouches so much more than anything else.

Most any smaller pet store carries high end food. Supermarkets & Petco generally don't.

Re: The Truth About Pet Food
I used to feed my cats Natural Balance, until we found that Lydia had a kidney issue and the vet told us to switch us to Science Diet KD. She suggested we put Eddie on it too, since it is less calorie dense than Natural Balance.

Re: The Truth About Pet Food
We use Taste of the Wild-Wetlands version
It is a grain free food with human grade meat, berries, veggies and natural pro-biotic bacteria, like you find in yogurt for healthy GI tract.
Since we switched our dogs look great, soft shiny coats, bright eyes, not crust in them, better poop! Overall healthier!

Absolutely. That's where I get all my food. They're great, too, because I asked them to get Evo for me and they did, so if there's a particular food you want just ask them and they'll see if they can get it for you!

I am in East Islip. I looked and saw that Petco does carry Solid Gold, but the one for small dogs [I have a mini doxie so he eats smaller food] supposedly smells like fish b/c of the salmon in it! I won't even eat seafood, so I don't want my house smelling like it! What one do you give your dog? Your baby's little too right?

ETA: I just reread one of your posts. Is Nature's Organic small dry food? I don't want the pieces too big for my baby Leo!
