Very important- PLEASE read
My DH works as a 911 dispatcher in Suffolk county. He received a call yesterday morning about a 4 month old baby not breathing.
It turned out that the mom brought the baby into the bed in the middle of the night, and accidentally smothered her. She died later on.
Please keep this in mind and say a prayer for that poor woman and her family, as well as that little angel.

The exact reason why DH and I have agreed that having the baby in bed with us is not a good idea.

That poor family.
Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. I practiced co-sleeping and because of it would get a lot of articles similar in nature from my in laws to show how dangerous and 'bad' the practice was. It didn't stop us - but it definitely made us be very cautious and rigid with our co-sleeping rules.

Re: Very important- PLEASE read
My mother works at the medical examiners office and told me about this baby this morning. She also told me that it's likely that the case will be ruled a SIDS death. Almost all co-sleeping related deaths are ruled SIDS even though they clearly are not SIDS. I think that if people knew how many mothers roll over and smother their own babies they would think twice about bringing them into bed with them. I know that people think that they have maternal instincts that would prevent them from doing this, but don't you think that this mother thought the exact same thing? When you bring home a baby and you are so sleep deprived you really don't know what could possibly happen when you sleep.
I don't mean to sound like I am preaching because I am guilty of it too - I often brought my son into bed with me at around 5 or 6 am, but it was after getting a full nights sleep, although it's still no excuse. I also did wait until he was a little older (5+ months) but as my mother constantly reminds me, she sees accidents happen at this age as well. It's not always just the newborns because the older babies roll off the bed and get severely injured.

Well, that is because no one knows what SIDS is, it is a classification for babies who die for unknown reasons. There is no way to prove that it was suffocation v. SIDS.

Re: Very important- PLEASE read
OMG how awful--My heart breaks for that poor family. Co-sleping lik anything else is a responsibility. You have to know how you and DH/SO and if it is possible. Both our kids coslept with us--but its because we dont roll all over the place etc also there are other ways to mimic cosleeping without having the baby be in the actual bed.
I think cases like this give cosleeping a bad rap and makes people less reluctant to want to do it when it is just like anything else you would expose your child to--it comes with a disclaimer---
