Shot moms of boys
Are you concerned about your sons' height? I am 5'2 and Dh is 5'9 and the tallest man in his family, so clearly our son doesn't have a potential to be a basketball star, but I am very concerned that he will be very short. My father is only 5'7 and DH's brother and father are both very short at around 5'4-5'5. I am very worried that that's what awaits my son. I know how it hurts boys to be the shortest in class, on the sport team, in the dating pool, etc. and I am worried. I know there isn't anything I can do about this issue- height, unlike weight, is not something one can control. I am just wondering if any other boy moms are concerned about this and what their thought are on the issue...

Re: Shot moms of boys
Oh yeah.
I'm average height - about 5'4" and Rob is only 5'8". My dad was tall and Rob's brothers are tall - but we aren't. Robbie - he's on the higher end of the curve. He's no giant, but he's a little taller than average for his age. Noah? Well.. Noah is a whole other story! His 5 year old cousins are taller than him and he'll be 7 in July (to be fair, both of them have very tall parents). He's hyper conscious of it too because he is the smallest boy in his class and one boy has picked on him before. It breaks my heart.
BUT.. I ask the doctor every year if there is a problem because he is VERY petite and each year the doctor says he's really fine. He's small, but he's healthy and that is what I focus on.

Re: Shot moms of boys
BTW... *I* don't think those heights are "short".... (I'm about 5'6").
As long as DS is over 5', I'm not going to worry about it at all. There are also lots of disadvantages to being tall. I know quite a few tall guys who have bumps all over their foreheads from hitting things. They can't fit comfortably in small cars (and cars are trending smaller lately). I wrestled in HS, and grapple in MMA, and some of the best wrestlers are shorter, for many reasons.
There are definitely some advantages to being "not that tall"....
DS has a classmate that is in lots of sports. He is by far the smallest one on all the teams. However, everyone agrees that he is definitely the best one in soccer and lacrosse.

Actually - Noah plays lacrosse and is the smallest one.. but it gives him major advantages. He's scrappy and can dig in and get to things nobody else can. Plus his size is kind of deceptive.. that little man is FAST!

Re: Shot moms of boys
While my boys aren't short yet (Kevin is one of the tallest in his class), I always hope they grow to be tall and athletic so I can relate. I guess I always was the shortest and hated it (even though I am tall now - I didn't grow until mid-hs). DH said he had the late growth spurt (short and chubby until puberty) and it caused him issues growing up. I also grew up with most men in our family being pretty tall (talking 6 foot being shortest) and lean andn into sports so it is what I am use to. But think about it - has it effected your DH's life too much? Some short kids are the best athletes...so you just never know where their strengths will lie. I guess it is our job to instill the best we can confidence in whatever type of body they ay have. So far Kevin is a bigger kid for his age but he is not very athletic at all and can't run - he's slow.....we are hoping it all comes with age!

Re: Shot moms of boys
I have two boys 20 months apart. Robert at 11 and a half is five foot three and 120 he wears a mens size nine sneaker....hes HUGE very tall with wide shoulders ......Nik is almost ten and is 4 foot 7 and 64 pounds he is very skinny and muscular....rob wears a 16/18 nik wears an 8. rob plays football last year nik wanted to play . Its tackle football and I was a wreck. I spoke to the president of the leauge many times about Niks size. He made me comfotable enough to let him try. Nik is a amazing athlete. the first five days of football they do workouts with the high school varsity team and the last day of it the have a punt kick and toss tounrey and who ever has the most yards wins...that day I went to the president of the leauge and said I was going to pull Nik he was so tiny compared to the other kids....he told me to wait ....guess who won the tourney ....Nik...he also made first string and played center.....Nik is smaller then most of the girls in his class and though he has some frustrations with his size he gets a kick out of things like being able to do more sit ups then the bigger kids etc in gym.....he also has the little girls falling all over him....what he lacks in size he makes up in personality and spirit. I do often worry about how it wlll matter as he gets older especially because he has such a tall brother and they are back to back grades....but he seems fine with it....

Re: Shot moms of boys
I think about it. Al is by far the tallest in his family, at 5'10. He was small throughout high school and didn't reach his full height until he was in college. His brother is 5'5-5'6, and his father is 5'3?
I don't have height on my side either. My dad is 5'8, and he has a brother who's 5'2.
Erik is small for his age, but he's only 2. I know he won't be 6', but I'm hoping for 5'8+

Re: Shot moms of boys
I worry from time to time but most of the time I just don't care. DH and I are both 5 ft. 4. My parents are both taller than I am. His mom is not even 5 feet tall. My husband is strong as an ox despite being over 40 now and having juvenile diabetes. Sports were never a problem for him. I just never cared about height. My last BF was 6 ft 4 but that didn't exactly keep me with him. My first love was maybe an inch taller than my husband. I have faith that my son will not be picked on but lord help the person who tries!!!!!!!!!

Re: Shot moms of boys
Thank you so much for your replies, everyone! It's nice to know I am not the only one worrying about this issue. I do hope that he will grow up about average or a little bellow that. He is now 3'4 at 5 years old and is shorter than most of his classmates. In the meantime, I am enrolling him in all kind of sports to build up his confidence and ability to kick butt if need be!
And for the record, I personally never liked very tall guys, I prefer a man who is not taller that 5'9 or so.

Hey Kate, Peyton was 37inches at her 2 year check up but she is a giant, off the charts. I married a tall guy but always had a thing for short guys my whole life

Re: Shot moms of boys
I don't really worry about it. I am 5'3" and DH is 5'9", our PED told us that the average height for an American man is 5'8" so I think DS will be fine
