spinoff to illegal job interview questions--do you wear your wedding rings on an interview
I know some women who have taken them off for an interview, and others who have said it is a good idea. Has anyone done this? Thoughts?

I always have….I always thought it would be good to show I was settled down in life. My DH always does too, he wants the interviewer to know he’s a family man…
Now, as an HR person, when I interview – I do look to see if the person I am interviewing is wearing any rings but it does not impact my judgment of them in any way.

Re: spinoff to illegal job interview questions--do you wear your wedding rings on an interview
I took my engagement ring off for an interview. A few people told me to do so bc the interviewer could look at it like I'm going to take off for a wedding and honeymoon - then a baby....etc.
I wouldnt take of my wedding rings for one but I was ok with just the engagement ring

I take off my E-ring not my wedding band. E-ring in case mine is bigger than the interviewer (even though it's not that big) I just don't want to look like I'm showing off, you know?

When I was engaged I thought about taking it off...but didn't.
Now that I'm married honestly I'd keep it on...but mostly because DH and I got matching tattoos on our ring fingers and I'd rather an interviewer see my rings instead of a tattoo.

I wear a simple plain band instead of my e-ring & diamond eternity band just so there are no presumptions.

I do take off my rings at most interviews that I do not know the person or company.
In other situations...I wear only my wedding band.

I'd put on a plain band. I would not wear my diamonds. I just think that some, but certainly not all HR personel make judgements. They should know that I am a family person. Unfortunately, lots of HR see that as a potential expense due to the possible health insurance my family may/may not need.

I've worn mine. A wedding set is different than just an e-ring.

Re: spinoff to illegal job interview questions--do you wear your wedding rings on an interview
i take my engagement ring off.
i think it does matter a little. since i was unemployed i think people assumed it was entirely by choice since my diamond ring could imply to some that i could afford to not work. also, dh has told me that he and colleagues have noticed women's engagement rings on interviews and think to themselves that the bigger the ring, the less committed they might be to the job. not fair or appropriate, but it's reality.
after i got laid off and still had to work, i dialed into a conf call and ppl were talking about my ring on the call! it made me feel a little weird. they were syaing how "gorgeous" it was. it isn't that humungo, but it's a respectable size in some circles. so now i don't wear my ring to work either now that i found a temp job. don't want them to think i don't need the job.

Re: spinoff to illegal job interview questions--do you wear your wedding rings on an interview
thanks Karabara; i had an interview last week that i wore my E-ring to and i made two hand jestures while trying to explain something and i swear the lady looked and followed my hand both times. Maybe i was being paranoid; but i thought she was looking at it. From then i kept that hand down!
I have 2 more interviews this week and will not wear my e-ring to them.
Just don't want people to think i wouldn't be committed to the job. Once i get further along in the process and or see an offer coming; i'll mention about getting married (since they should probably know in advance that i will be taking time off to get married next year!

ITA with this. Women can be competitive about e-rings, so I would never want this to be a factor with a female interviewer. And people DO make judgments about bigger e-rings = not "needing" the job. When I got engaged and showed my coworkers the ring, one woman said in a very catty way "Well THAT'S an 'I'm marrying well' ring if I ever saw one". And compared to many e-rings you see in NYC, believe me mine was average.
I would have no reservations about wearing a wedding band though, I don't feel that sends up any red flags.
