Lice question
If you're checking your child's head daily and taking out nits and lice (found 5 each over last 5 days) do you really need to use Rid shampoo??
I'm an experienced lice mom with 2 older girls but just curious what others experience has been.
My Rid is 2 years expired. It cost 22$ 4 years ago. Not sure that it worked all that good. I think checking and picking head daily is what works best.

Re: Lice question
RID only kills lice, it does nothing for nits. That's why it's so important to retreat 7-10 days later.

Re: Lice question
Lice are getting resistant to shampoos -- you're better off going to lice specialists who treat by checking each strand and killing all they find. :/

Re: Lice question
We've had lice twice and the most recent was with 2/3 girls and I have never used the shampoo. I don't believe in all those chemicals. I coat their head in tea tree oil conditioner and comb using a lice comb. The tea tree conditioner supposedly smothers any live lice remaining. I obsessively comb and recheck and we've easily gotten rid of it. Another key for us is making sure you strip beds and put everything in the dryer on high for 60 minutes. Combs, brushes, and hair accessories go in the freezer when not being used.

Re: Lice question
To kill the lice you can coat her hair in olive oil overnight. It will suffocate them. Then I would just pull the nits out myself. My daughter had lice 3 times in Kindergarten and I found the Rid comb never got out the nits. I had to pull them out myself. The comb from the Fairy Lice Mothers works great too.

I found 4 yesterday. Used tea tree oil and coconut oil (her her was soaked in oil) overnight and it didn't seem to do much because I found 4 more today
I have been taking out only 1-4 nits each day since last Monday. I skipped one night (Friday) and went 36 hours without checking maybe that's why I found so many yesterday and today. Sucks.
I didn't wash bedding until Friday though and then put everything in the dryer again today

Re: Lice question
Make sure to keep washing all sheets, clothes, etc. in hot water and dry in a hot temperature. Also make sure to wash combs, brushes, hair ties too.
Things like pillows, cushions, etc. I bag up for a period of time.
Depending on what's available, I do mayo or coconut oil in my hair overnight.
I do try to pick out every nit but it does get hard. I may overdo the mayo/ coconut oil but psychosomatically I feel them for weeks even when they are gone.

If I were you (and I was about 2 weeks ago!), I would put all bedding (pillows, sheets, mattress covers, blankets, stuffed animals) in the dryer on high for 60 minutes every morning. I also put coats, sweatshirts, book bags, and anything that goes near their heads in the dryer on high for 60 minutes. I think that along with being obsessive about checking their heads is how we got rid of it so quickly. I check their heads every morning and every evening, sectioning and combing out. It usually took me about 2 hours to do each child's head when they were newly discovered. I think getting the nits out is key as well as checking again and again to make sure none are hidden and hatch...you really need to check for a few weeks to be in the clear.

Thanks this is the worst time for this to happen as I have very little spare time as it is. I am spending 30 min each evening and really can't do mornings. I will focus on bedding and clothing this week too.

Get a product called Lice Freee. They sell it at Walgreens. Saturate head and leave on overnight. If you are missing nits they WILL hatch and you are at square one again. Get the lice terminator comb.

I dealt with this problem this week. Ugh. Caught it the day she got it...or could've been from the day before. A kid in class was heavily infested. Went to a lice company and gone in 2 hours. Rechecked with them today and still gone. Highly recommend the professional route.

We went to Deliceful, and it was $225. They have a New Hyde Park and a Hauppauge location. Expensive, but worth it to me. I paid $30 to have my own head checked (clear). I wanted to add, that 3 of my friends have also been there this week, and had a good experience.

Lice question
What does the $225 cost cover?
They clear the head, but isn't there potential that they are in the pillows/blankets/bed/elsewhere in the house?
DC might be clean and clear when you leave the professional but will get them as soon as they get home?

It covers them treating your child. They put a natural lice killer in their hair (my daughter had no live bugs though), and then they sit and pick the nits out strand by strand. My daughter only had five, so like I said, very new case. Literally just got it. It also covers a re-check to make sure they are in fact all gone.
Obviously you have to wash and dry on hot heat your child's bedding. That was done while I was at the lice place. I vacuumed and, lint rolled the couch (that is way better than vacuuming), did my car, all our bedding, and bagged up stuffed animals that were on the bed. Once they are gone from the head, they can't survive for more than 24-36 hours. The eggs only hatch and survive on a head. Like I said, new case, so the risk of it being in any of *our* items was very low. A head that has been infested for a while...yeah high risk unless you are diligent.
If you go home, and your child lays right back into that same bedding without being washed and dried , yes you risk re-infestation. That is why they do a re-check about a week later.
Lice shouldn't (and doesn't have to) take WEEKS to clear. You CAN get rid of it in a day. A lot of my friends were clear in a day, never came back. If you are nit picking a few a night, and the ones you missed hatched, you are starting ALL over. The heavily infested girl I referenced above at school has been out over a week. Obviously her parent is home treating, and it doesn't seem to be working. I personally wouldn't want to deal with that. I know the price is prohibitive for many, but worth my sanity!

Re: Lice question
The best approach I've found is be aggressive. It's a pain in the neck but one night - hours later - and you should be good (except for the re-wash on the hair 7 days later). Wash and dry all bedding HOT water and HOT dryer. ANything that cannot fit in the wash/dryer (pillows, stuffed animals, comforters) needs to be bagged up TIGHT and put somewhere else in the house (garage or attic) so that if anything is in there and hatches, it will die - leave that stuff in bags for 10 days. You have to do the shampoo or something similar. I've heard Listerine is amazing...google it for info Im not really sure of the details but, its less chemicals on their heads than the shampoo. In addition to all of thise, you need to pick out the bugs and nits that you see. Treat your own hair too while you're at it - and all of your bedding as well. I also bought a lice spray and sprayed the mattresses and couches to kill anything that MAY be there - and vacuumed the house and all of the furniture. I agree with PP - picking a few out each day probably isnt going to solve the problem. Plus one lice can lay a TON Of eggs in a very short time.

Lice question
My DD and I (eeek!) had a TERRIBLE case of lice (gave it to my mom and neice as well on vacation (oops) a year or so ago. We used a service near me (CT), which was quite costly because we both had a lot of lice and a lot of hair. For me, it was worth it because it took sooooo much anxiety out of it. They gave me the facts on how to deal with it so I wasn't going insane doing unnecessary things. And, it worked because we didn't reinfest ourselves.
This is the sum of it all: Basically the only treatment that works is removal. You must remove all lice and nits. If you use an oil, shampoo, or whatever it probably won't work or won't be 100% effective. Then, you need to remove them anyway because if you don't, you won't be able to tell what nits are live and what aren't when you do re-checks. So skip all the smothering and remove them. There are natural shampoos, oils, etc that loosen the glue so the nits are easier to remove and make your head a less hospitable place for the nits.
When you remove them, you need to comb the hair with a lice comb in 4 different directions so you get every "side" of every hair follicle. I think there are videos on the website of the company I used (hair fairies). This process took 5 hours for my daughter at her first treatment. It was expensive but worth it for us because when I periodically check her head, she sits for about 3 minutes and then starts complaining. In their chair, she watches a movie, eats snacks, plays video games and doesn't say a peep. Plus, I knew it was being done right. They said a lot of people do it themselves especially after having it once and knowing the process.
As far as bedding and stuff, the bugs can only live for 24-48 hours off the body and they can not crawl well at all so it is not going to travel across a room to get to your head. I was told to wash all the sheets, blankets pillow cases every night, but just put the other stuff in a plastic bag until you are clear of lice. Any lice in there will be dead in less than 2 days so there is no need to wash comforters, stuffed animals etc if you don't use them. I just washed our bedding daily and kept it minimal.
As PP said, you can put brushes, hair accessories in the freezer. I had 2 sets so I would use one, put it in the freezer and then use a different the next day, which would go in the freezer then and I would use the first.
Now I put an oil (got it at hair fairies) along DD's hairline every day to prevent them and so far so good.
HTH!
ETA: just realized that my dd had lice in my avatar picture. She probably had it since school and that was in August She didn't complain of itching until that trip and I wasn't itchy at all!!

Lice question
Is this going around? On Sunday I saw my daughter had lice, bought the shampoo and treated it. Have been combing and removing every day. Found 4 lice yesterday and removed nits. Today found 1 live and 2 nits. Her head seems clean right now but I'll be continuing this process everyday probably till Sunday. I purchased the fairy tale lice prevention spray and it gets here tomorrow. I'll be spraying on her every day now and keeping her hair in braids and not loose. I keep washing bedding everyday.
She started K in September and I am pretty sure she got it from someone at school. No one in our family has it. Nurse insists it's not from school. Monday no notice came home about lice. I'm pretty pissed they didn't send letters home to all the parents in the class. I do not want my removal attempts to get hindered by her getting it again if there are other infested kids. I'm thinking to have a chat with the teacher by Friday.
Shouldn't a letter be sent home??

The nurse in our school checked the kids, and missed kids that actually had lice. I wouldn't rely on the nurse to be honest.

It's always going around, and yes, absolutely a letter should be sent home! I would call the Principal. You are missing nits that are hatching if you are having to repeat the process everyday and finding new live bugs. Which shampoo did you get? I would get the Lice Free spray and saturate the scalp and leave on overnight. It's non toxic. It SAYS it kills nits, but I don't believe that. But I would get that over anything else. I know my friend's "nitpicker" recommends that one. I used it on my daughter the night before taking her to Deliceful.

Our school sends letters to classes where it has been found. We also have a no nit policy, which is rare according to my nurse. Some schools only require seeing live lice to be excluded from school...mine you can be excluded for having nits and no live lice.
