maybe im old fashioned ..tellme what you think
I went to private school so doing this would be out of teh questions.Besides ging to private school i just think kids are different these days. Two things happened...
1) i am 15.5 weeks peggo and a few weeks ago when i wore a maternity short or teh first time one girl was whispering o aboy and i sais whats goignon the boy blurts out"she says you look preggo"I just brushed it off didnt say yes or no but to me its rude.
2) My math coach came into my room ad someone yells out "is that your husband?"
Now personallly i would never have had teh nerve to do either one of those things. Someone walked into my room it was none of my business hwo it was unless he/she was introduced by the teacher.
This is 6th grade

Re: maybe im old fashioned ..tellme what you think
I have found that kids of this age are very curious about their teachers' personal lives. My kids used to have me married to EVERY man who came into the room, especially the ones who were close to my age.
It also seems like kids these age (not all of them) have no boundaries and will just say whatever they think. They don't realize that they're being rude.

I think students are more brazen that you used to be. Largely because they have no self censoring mechanisms. For example, one of my students gave me his number and told me to call him. When his actions were reported to the AP he didn't think he had done anything wrong.

I have kids yell out that my underwear was showing, my bra was hanging out, etc.
Last year I was called a white bi!tch by a student,
They have absolutely NO respect for authority what so ever!

Re: maybe im old fashioned ..tellme what you think
You're absolutely right. Kids these days have no respect and no restraint... what they said to you is actually pretty tame... I've gotten some REALLY rude things. Just today some boy called me a f***ing b**** because I wouldn't let him go to the water fountain. That's not even the worst thing I've heard! When I was in school, I would have NEVER spoken to a teacher (or any adult) that way.

Re: maybe im old fashioned ..tellme what you think
When I was pregnant both times I was teaching high school. The first time, I was getting a lot of stares and giggles from the girls. Eventually (around 12 weeks) two of them came up to me and asked me! I knew at that point it was time to tell my principal!
The second time, I told everyone before anyone could ask, but two girls said, "Yeah, we kept saying, 'Mrs. C is getting fat!" I was like, "Thaaaank you!"
Both times, many students totally thought it was OK to touch my belly which is NOT cool.
I believe in clear boundaries between teachers and students and many of them don't know where that line is. However, most of the time I thought it was really harmless and actually sweet although I NEVER let them know that! Still though, I can't believe having that kind of nerve--I know I never did in high school.

Re: maybe im old fashioned ..tellme what you think
I totally agree.
This will seem out of left field and totally unrelated, but I often wonder about the consequences of us teaching Writer's Workshop the way a lot of us do. Now, I received my Masters from Teachers College, and I really believe in the program. BUT, as lots of you will already know, it calls upon us to share some stories of our lives with our students. While I think that's nice, TO AN EXTENT, I also feel that it opens up a whole new can of worms. The more the students know about us personally, the more comfortable they start to feel with us. I've found this year that my kids have started to view me as more of a peer than anything else, and I've had to put a (really harsh) stop to it.
But I am in total agreement that the kids today are mostly lacking in respect for their elders. The things some of my kids have tried to pull are absolutely amazing. I have one girl in particular who gives me and talking back every day. I finally took her out in the hall, looked her straight in the eyes and said, "Let me make something very clear to you right now. If you and I are going to have a good year, you're going to need to drop the attitude". She was totally shocked, but she knows I'm not going to take it.
Sorry, I think this turned into more of a rant than anything! But I do think the lack of respect is appalling. Imagine how people in their 60s and 70s must feel about it!
