Cold sores question

For most of my life I have suffered from cold sores. I get a few a year, some worse than others. Usually a couple in the winter, and one or two over the summer from being expose to the sun..
Recently, I've had them for almost a month...as soon as one heals, three more pop up on my bottom lip.. ugh I feel and look so gross!!
Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for how to treat them. I'm thinking about going to the doctor this time because I've never had such a bad case of them.
Embarrassed to post this.. Chat Icon but I really need some advice!

Re: Cold sores question

Try taking Lysine every day. It is an amino acid supplement. It will not do anything when you already have a cold sore but when I am really good about taking it daily, it prevents cold sores. It's available at vitamin stores. I am sure there is info about it online, too. I take it in pill form. I think that creams that contain it are a crock and don't work. I am hoping to start to take Lysine again but I have to start treatment for an unrelated medical problem and I want clearance that this won't interfere with medications. In the meantime, I have been getting the dreaded cold sores and I see a huge difference in the amount that I get.

Re: Cold sores question

Is a cold sore the same as a canker sore? I read in the Medical column in Newsday yesterday about eating Kiwi's. It has something in it that helps. Doesn't hurt to try it.

I also get them a few times and when I pg with DD for about a month I was getting them back to back. I have taken valtrex in the past and I didn't really notice if it helped to heal faster or not. I do use Deniver ointment. It is a precription cream for cold sores. It works so much better than Abreva, I think.

Re: Cold sores question

Lysine pill daily

I suffer them as well.

I keep Valtrex with me....prescription needed by doc.
They work. The first feel of a tingle, I pop one and the sore starts healing right away. It does pop out but not as bad.
I cant live without Valtrex!!

Exactly the same here. I usually carry the pills with me!

BTW, you can even buy Lysine in drug stores, Wal-Mart, etc...not just a vitamin shop!
