Oh wow!!! We're in but there's a bit of a problem.
The situation...
I am returning to work this coming Sept. There is a daycare center in my area that comes highly recommended, very few people know about it and is very small, 38 kids total, birth to 5 years old and it runs $300 cheaper a month/per child than my second choice. The monthly cost, really isn't the issue here though... it's placement.
It has always been my #1 choice so last June (07), when DC's were 3 months old I put them on the waiting list... they are #1 for the community, they take employees first (DH and I do not work there). As they only have 6 kids in the younger/older infant room I was getting nervous if two placements were going to be available by this Sept as I have yet to receive one call from them.
So I went in there this morning to speak with the director... long story short, they should have TWO spots opening NEXT month in the younger infant room. If I "pass" there is no guarantee of a placement by Sept as there are many kids on the waiting list who want a SEpt placment. This is a logistical miracle!!
So, my dilemma... I am on child care leave from my district until Sept. We NEED to take these two spots so we are looking at a daycare bill of approx $2K per month for April-August... $10K and I'm not working and can't go back to my old job, obviously, before Sept.
They can't go part time. I must pay for full-time and they can't "drop-out" and hold the spot for the summer.
That's a big bill. I need to do something, part time, and have it fit into the schedule.
I'm open to all legal suggestions.
Right now all I have is tutoring which would still be difficult because it would be late afternoon.
ETA: I'm almost positive I am NOT allowed to substitute teach while on leave.

Wow that is a tough one!! If this were me I think I would bite the bullet and enroll them, it sounds like way too good of an opportunity to pass up.
I would also try and contact your school and see if you are defintely allowed to sub while on leave.
Good Luck!!!

Losing that spot IS NOT an option for sure. They're in! They're in!!
Ok, here's your chance. Go get the part-time job you always wanted!! Did you ever want to work retail? waitress? be a Starbucks barista?
or better yet....ask the daycare if they need a teacher temporarily...I know Maddie's daycare is looking.

George Clooney's towel girl
I'd probably make more in one hour of tutoring than I'd make all day/after taxes at the daycare... and I don't have early childhood experience... ok, at least not certified.
DH mentioned Starbucks... I have a grad degree but I 'm not sure if I could keep the venti half caf mocha blah-blah-blah straight I'd be screaming... "Oh please, just say small, med or large"

no suggestions on what to do for the $, but that is great news about the day care!!!
ETA - why dont you call a temp agency? You could work in an office & I'm sure you'd make more than retail. That is of course, if George Clooney already has a towel girl.

It's very low. I can make many times over the hourly rate if I did it privately.
It's pointing more and more to tutoring, now I have to just get some contacts at my neighboring high schools.

Re: Oh wow!!! We're in but there's a bit of a problem.
What are the odds that one spot will open? Would you be willing to chance it and hold one spot starting now and ask them to let you know whenever the next spot opens -so you're just paying for one temporarily.
I was in a similar situation (the #1 daycare on our list had only 6 spots and I've been on a list since october). I just found out this a.m. that our baby has his/her spot but I told the director up until now to let me know whenever a spot opens as we'd be willing to pay or do whatever to hold that precious spot!
Good luck!

I thought I was going to have to do this all along and pray that the second spot opened by Sept or shortly thereafter, my MIL said she could watch them or one for a month or two if necessary.
This is IT. There are 6 kids in the room they would need to go into... we need 2 of those spots. There are also several kids that are on the waiting list behind us and there are several requests for Sept. It is rare that a spot opens due to size and the fact that they must take employees kids first, then community members.
They will age out of the infant room in the next few months. Once they are in the toddler room the chances of two spots opening are slim to none as the younger infant room feeds into the toddler room. I would not only have to hope that two toddlers graduate or are pulled out but that none of the kids from the infant room are anywhere near ready to go up to the toddler room. I'd have better luck in Vegas.
There are only 38 kids total from birth to age 5 in this center. Six kids in the infant room, 8 in the first toddler room, about 8 in the second and 14 from age 3 to 5.
Unlike most moms of two it doesn't pay for me to quit for several reasons although I think 1/2 the twin mommies I've met are SAHM's.
I think most of the rest have a nanny situation as it is cheaper in the long run and less hectic with pick up and drop off, it's just not a situation DH and I feel comfortable with. I want them to be around other kids and I want a lot of eyes watching who is watching them.
Actually, all might work out. DH just reminded me of a business idea that popped into my head this weekend. I was thinking what I would do during the summers while they go, some days, to daycare... now it looks like I'll be getting that off the ground.

Re: Oh wow!!! We're in but there's a bit of a problem.
I just spoke to a mom whose kids were in that center, it is very rare that spots open.
She was pg with her first when she went on the waiting list. She had to place her DC in another daycare for a year before this center called her. So for one spot she was on the waitlist for over a year and a half!!!!
When she became pg with her second child she told her DH about her BFP and the second person to know was the director of the center so she could reserve a spot for her second DC. She just got pg and told them to put her on the waitlist. She was called before her FMLA was up so her second DC went in a few weeks early.
I don't have to send them all day, every day. I'll probably drop them off on the later side and pick them up right after their afternoon nap.
So this is all good news about the placement.
The money is a bit stressful...
Oh, and I was so emotional about them going so soon (I thought I had more time ) that I ate A LOT of the cake FIL brought over yesterday Guess, I'll be working that off with all of my free time

Re: Oh wow!!! We're in but there's a bit of a problem.
Why can't you return to your district, now?
In my district you can return at any point, even if you returned your letter asking permission to be out the entire year. this happened to someone in my department last year, she returned in the middle of a quarter.

Congrats on getting them in!
Do you have to send them all summer? Can you sublet their spots until September?
It's a shame you couldn't go back to work earlier. Does your district only let you go back in September? i think a lot of districts are doing that now.

To get two spots is amazing!!! Good Job!!!!! As much as it stinks, I say go for it! Even if you can supplement the cost with some sort of part-time job, then at least it is something!
We are starting to look at day care alternatives as well!
Good Luck!!!

I agree....also it will be good to transition them now, then in Sept. when it will be stressful enough for you going back to work.
