While I have not done this, a bunch of my friends have. If you want you can FM me with questions to ask them. I know some have loved it and others have not. Really depends on your placement.

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows

I agree about the placement. I was a cohort 5 fellow and was lucky to find a school that was really supportive. We had 10 fellows start my first year. Not all stayed, but several of us are still there. FM with any questions Chat Icon

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows

Feel free to FM... my DH is in Fellows right now and is getting certiifed in special ed. it's good that you're interested in that, because Fellows only certifies you in shortage areas, one of them being special ed. he loves it, but i have to be honest, it's not for everyone. the board of ed. is dysfunctional on a good day and they put you in the worst schools with little support. however, my husband was lucky because a friend of mine works with the board of ed. and got him into a decent school close to home.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows

I am a Fellow- I just completed my second yearteaching. I teach CTT as the special ed component. I made my career change in my late twenties and it was really the best decision for me! I am lucky to be in a decent area of Queens (they pick the region for you, you find your own job) with extremely supportive adminstration! Let me know what other questions you have! I would be happy to answer them.

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows

Thanks ladies!! Do you have any say in the region? Like for example, I live on the boarder of Nassau/Suffolk. Could I request a district in Queens?

Did anyone do this with young children at home? We are expecting in January 09, so I figure that would give me time to "adjust" to this life change before I had to start classes in the summer.

How competitive is it? I actually applied back in '04 and got called for an interview, but decided not to go through with it at the time for a variety of reasons........mainly because I just had finished my Master's in social work and knew a few NYC teachers who had talked me out of it.........however, I have also heard that sometimes teachers who have gone the "traditional route" will try to do that for multiple reasons.

I notice on another board I frequent that teachers who are not fellows have taken that attitude with me anyways.

Can you describe your typical schedule from the summer and then once the school year begins? TIA!

Would you be willing to share some of the "dysfunctional" stories? I feel like what I do for a living now deals with a lot of the same issues so if I can work with that (mostly bureacracy with administration too), it can't be THAT much harder. TIA!

I no longer work in the NYC schools, but I did. Many of the teachesr on here are NYC teachers and can probably speak better about the problems, but what I found and mty DH is finding is that in many schools the administration is made up of a bunch of idiots that don't know much about children and how they learn. all the city cares about is test scores and getting kids to pass the tests. budgets are small and a lot of city teachers spend their own money and time on supplies.

however, there are some great city schools and i liked my experience. DH is loving it, but it's not for everyone. you will deal with tough kids and families, but the bigger issues, IMO is the administration. but that's not to say some schools don't have great principals who know what they're doing. it's the overall BS from the head admins. on Court Street and Bloomberg and Klein who want to run schools like a business.

i also found the city EXTREMELY annoying whenever you had questions about benfits, your pay, etc. etc. it takes them FOREVER to get anything done.

Fellows is a great program and my husband loves it, so dont' be discouraged!

Re: NYC Teaching Fellows

Thanks for the tips ladies, keep 'em coming. I told my mom yesterday (she's a retired teacher from the traditional route, never worked in NYC) and she is not necessarily trying to talk me out of it, but was focused big time on all the "cons" and told me to think long and hard before I get myself involved with this, especially with a new baby. *Sigh*. She also knows a lot of teachers who started out in NYC who hated it. I guess to be continued..........I am sure these are normal feelings everyone goes through though in making a decision like this.
