Updated DECISION
So the firm didn't grant me an offer because I have to leave every day by 5:30. I'm dsiappointed, but this is my life. I'm a mom. Now I know why there are no moms working full time there.
It is disappointment because it would have launched my career in the direction I wanted it to go. Instead, I am staying in the same field of law that I currently work in. What makes it worse, is that I told the guy at the interview my situaion and he told me it was not a problem. And then turned around and called the headhunter and told me it may be an issue.
So in a way its easier that this decision was made for me. So today I have to tell the firm I am accepting their position, and tell the city I won't be taking their position.
Is really disappointing. There truly is a glass ceiling for moms who have to take care of their kids.
ETA: SO I DID get an offer from that firm. The partner called me directly (not through the headhunter) with the caveat that I make child arrangments in the evening. I told them I wasn't interested in changing my current situation but thanked them for the consideration. I really feel proud of how I handled it.

Re: I;m DYING here.
I feel for you. I just went through the same thing. Whats the difference in jobs?. I hate to say it but my decision was based on which one I "thought" would have less of a chance of getting laid off and was closer to home (travel costs) Good luck!!!

Re: I;m DYING here - updated
how about a compromise? Ask them if they would let you leave by 5:30 2-3 days a week? Frankly, if they really want you, they will see you are interested and come up with a compromise. How about finishing the work when you get home for an hour.
If the offer is really good and you are happy with the comp, then I would try to negotiate.
Since you have another job already, you have a lot of leverage. You could stick to your guns and see what happens.
Good luck.

Re: Updated DECISION
I think that stinks. You would have been miserable working for a place that doesn't have other working moms and work life balance programs. There are companies that do.
I think it's remarkable that you got so many interviews and so much interest in this crappy market. That is a testament to your skill, expertise and professionalism. Go YOU! You should be patting yourself on the back.
You didn't want to work for a crappy firm that wouldn't have your interests at heart.
Congrats on taking the other job, earning more than you would have at the city job. You can always continue to search out the "perfect" job, all the while increasing your skill level and contacts.
I for one am very proud of you.

Re: Updated DECISION
You did the right thing. I am sure that in the future you are not going to regret having turned down that offer. It probably would not have been a family friendly workplace on many other levels in addition to the evening issue. .

Re: Updated DECISION
You did the right thing. I am actually taking a demotion at work after my child is born so I can have more time to spend with him. I don't think they are going to change my pay though which is a plus-----just my title and level of responsibility. I think I will be a lot happier though. Family needs to come first.

Re: Updated DECISION
You will not regret your decision. When your child/children are older you can work as much as you need to. This time with your children goes so fast...you don't want to miss it.
I also work in a demanding field. However, the company I work for has allowed me to be flex time. I do have to sacrafice promotions/raises but it's all worth it.
Good luck!
