step parents and insurance for step children

so, we have temp custody of my ss and we are going to pursue full custody. in the meantime, can i have him put on my insurance so that we can take him to the doctor? has anyone done this? who would i contact? do i need full custody to have him insured? TIA

He can absolutely go on your insurance. All you need is his social security number. We looked into putting my stepson on mine, but in the end DH and BM decided to keep what they had for him and pay. Still don't know why, but they did. But I remember looking into it and it was not a problem. I would think you would contact your employer or human resources and I don't know what insurance you have but for mine there are only certain times of year someone can be added, so check into that too.
