just a vent... crying, moody, and cranky today

What the hell is wrong with me?
I'm so stressed out & nervous about starting another year of teaching tomorrow.
All week I've been waking up early every morning feeling like throwing up. I've been crying over every little thing today.
I don't feel ready although I do have stuff planned for this week. The anxiety is making me sick.
But the thing is, I'm not a new teacher, I've been doing this 5 years now & I still feel just as sick over it. It never gets mentally easier for me, I can never feel relaxed or calm.
I just don't think it's normal to be this stressed over a job. And I don't think other teachers are feeling this way, at least not to the extent that I do.
Ugh, I don't know, I just hate this time of year. I wish I could be excited in a positive optimistic way, rather than feeling such dread. What's wrong with me???

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I wish I had some advice, but it helps that you have things planned. That's a huge part of the battle. There really are so many unknowns and that can really be stressful. I hope you're ok and that tomorrow goes well for you.

i get this way a little bit, too--- sad that summer is over, nervous about the upcoming year.
BUT i remember something that an old principal told our staff one year on the first day for staff. he said " as teachers and educators, we're lucky. we're the only profession that gets a chance to make a fresh start every year". and i just really think about that and how true it is. and i look at it as a chance to start fresh, fix anything that i might want to change from last year- just have a whole clean slate to start from.
not sure if that will help... but its something to think about! good luck this year!! Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I've been there. You are fearing the unknown. Yes, new pencils, new notebooks, and fresh starts are exciting but I feel much better when I get into the groove of a new schedule and my students start to understand my sense of humor, etc. Chat Icon

I love this!

I was just talking to a running buddy about how we both get nervous before a race... we are not going to win it, so why are we nervous. It just makes me feel more alive!

You are definitely not alone in feeling this way!! Chat Icon

Though I haven't been getting physically sick, I have been in a bad mood for a few days now Chat Icon and I know it's because of the dread that a new school year brings..... getting back in the routine..... having to get up EARLY when I'm not at all a morning person........ and having responsibilities that don't exist all summer long.......

My DH raised a good point today though as I vented about the upcoming week... He reminded me that most people feel EXACTLY like I do and he doesn't think there will be a single teacher in my school tomorrow saying "I AM SOOOOOO GLAD TO FINALLY BE BACK HERE!!!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT TO START PLANNING LESSONS AGAIN AND GETTING THE YEAR STARTED!!" ..... He is SO right! In reality, though we will try to put a positive spin on things to weaken the blow of going back .. MOST teachers feel just the way you (and I) do!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon It's so hard coming back after a nice long vacation that we are so lucky to have!

So just think, we're all in this together.. and it's so great to have a board like LIF to come on and vent out all that teacher stress we'll come across!!

And so.... it's officially a school night..... 180 school days to go is it? Chat Icon I hope you have a GREAT first week back!! Chat Icon

I definitely feel nervous each year and this is my 7th year teaching! It's so annoying to feel this way every year. I was just thinking to myself that I need to finally get over this feeling. I know what I'm doing in the classroom by now and it will feel completely OK once I'm back into a routine.

The part of our jobs that is the hardest is the amount of responsibility we have and the fact that we are never truly "done" until June!

Good luck tomorrow!

totally random tonight!

I was reading in a magazine about being nervous...and a psychologist said that it's what helps our mind make sure that we are well prepared.

I thought that was an interesting take.
