Classroom Libraries?

Books are so expensive! How did you start your classroom libraries?

I am finishing my degree and have about a year before I start applying for a teaching job so I want to get a head start but sheeeesssshhhh....I could go in debt buying books!

Re: Classroom Libraries?

Chat Icon I have a huge classroom library and all the books came from my school! I never heard of having to supply the books! Chat Icon

I do frequently buy books if I think they look interesting and they are not already in my classroom.... but as for filling up my library, it's already all filled up from books supplied by my school!

Re: Classroom Libraries?

I took over for a teacher who ended up passing on so I got a lot of books that way..also, the city at one point provided a "mayor's library" so you can pray that happens at your school, but your best bet is to get your hands on some Scholastic book orders...the books are very reasonable and they have a lot of packages of books (ie. same series, topic, etc.) and they come out inexpensive as well..you also earn points from purchases and that can earn you books as well..I still use my points for books and now I have a sizable library...

Re: Classroom Libraries?

I have a massive classroom library...over 1000 books and with few exceptions, the majority have come from ongoing used book sales at my local library. The books are 10 cents each and I've gotten whole series for a dollar! Most of the books were only read once and then donated. I also go to the scholastic warehouse sale every december and a box of books that way.

The only time I go to Borders or B and N is when I need a specific book, since a used book sale is hit or miss with the selection.

check garage sales also!

pretty much what the others said. I inherited most of my library from retiring teachers. the rest i got from bonus points through scholastic order, garage sales and used book sales at my library. i would see what you grade you get and what you are given before you start buying.

1-inherit books from a retired teacher
2-when you do have your class, send out scholastic book orders to earn bonus points
3-scour thrift shops
4-hit garage sales
5-ebay (some parents do lots of used childrens books)
6-amazon (but I use this mostly for teacher refernece books)

scholastic definitely has a great selection of inexpensive books.

your school might give you a budget (mine does)

go to the school librarian and ask if she/he is weeding any books that you would appreciate them.

Just to add to the other suggestions...
At the end of the year, I always ask students if they have any books that they would like to donate to the classroom library. I usually give them some extra credit points if they do.

I have had children donate books, too. The other day, one of my girls from last year brought me in a bag. I found 4 books that were perfect for my class and passed the rest on to a new kiindergarten teacher.

I have also had parents donate books instead of goody bags for their childs birthday. That's a nice thing to do. I write in the cover the year and the child's name.
