Passport Name change question
Hey ladies, I have a question.
After almost 3 years of being married, I finally decided to change my name. Im not sure however where I can get a "certified copy" of my marriage certificate. What did you ladies send for your Passport?
TIA!

Hey chicky!
Scroll down to "Where can I get copies of my records?"
Marriage info for NYS
You can send the original in -- they will return it to you with your new passport. I know people get worried about doing it, but they absolutely send you back your certificate without any issues.

If your passport was issued UNDER a year ago -- and you are doing a name change, no fee is required.
If your passport was issued more than a year ago -- you must pay the name change fee.
However it doesn't change the time that you have to renew your passport...so lets say your passport is expiring in just a year -- if you do a name change now, you still have to pay a fee to renew it later.
This is why I have never changed my name on my passport since I got married in 2007, cause I figured I might as well juts use it until it expires. No sense in paying double fees. When I renew it, I'll change my name at the same time.
The information is located here on: Travel.state.gov

Re: Passport Name change question
This is all so confusing for me too. I changed my name on DL and Bank but never actually went to Social Security. Do I have to do that before I do my passport? Does anyone know? Can anyone take my hand and do this for me LOL....

Re: Passport Name change question
Ok You only need a marriage license (original), a new passport photo & your current passport with your maiden name. Your send all these things + $$ (if you passport was issued more then a year ago) They will return your marriage license & old passport with your new one. It takes around 3 weeks. You can get the form from your local post office. The Post office will also help if you have further questions.
Your SS card has nothing to do with this, however you really should change it, for tax reasons. Go to SS first thing in the am because by like 10 am it is filled with the most ghetto and scumy people (srry, just keepin it real). The only location I know of is Patchogue.

Passport and SS are 2 different things -- no worries in which one you have to do first.
I've been married since 2007 and have never changed either.
Just make sure you continue to file your taxes with your maiden name, until you change your SS# to the married one.
ETA: You can go to travel.state.gov and look up the passport information and fill out the form online and then it creates a PDF for you and you can print it out all pre-filled and bring it to the post office.

Re: Passport Name change question
This was helpful--thanks
I recently did SS (the IRS was wondering why I had assumed two identies )
Next PP and then liscense...I do not know why I am finding so hard to give up my last name.
I never even considered hyphenating and now I really wish I would have taken my maiden as my middle.
