Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

I would be interested in hearing this too! It seems like the norm is just some notes in a lesson plan book! Chat Icon I wish we could do that at my school!! Chat Icon

I keep 4 separate binders of lessons.

Reading
Writing
Math
Science/SS

oh and one for guided reading.

I pull out the lessons for each week and label them with the date in pencil. Then they will go back in the binder and I can then just pull them out next year.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

In the past, I have written plans, when I am required to do so. This year I am not required to do so, so I do not. My brain just works differently.

In my plan book, I write down the aim for each lesson. After the lesson, I make notes on what worked and what did not work. I also write down if I need to edit any worksheets or clarify instructions.

I also have a binder for each unit I teach. Each lesson (worksheets and ppts) is in its own protector sheet. Additionally I have files on my computer dedicated to each unit and then I have each lesson numbered in the order in which I teach it (Example: 01_Genetics_DNA_Structure).

I'm probably in the minority (but I've also been teaching for 10 years). I do have binders full of handouts and other materials for each prep that I teach, but I never ever type up lesson plans anymore. I don't bring anything to class with me other than copies I might be handing out. (I also teach on LI and have a chair who, while he can be a hassle in some ways, doesn't micromanage at all, so I know that in that sense, I'm very lucky.) But I basically go in each day with everything in my head for the different preps I teach. I just work better that way.

same here... i have binders of materials and resources i have gleaned and created over the years, but i don't and never have been required to write lesson plans except for the times i was formally observed. i do more of a written thing in my head and just jot it down in bullet form in my planner. i do have typed up unit plans that i have done in the past for certain books or units of study i've created, but those are more resources for me. nel and i are in the same district which does not require teachers to submit formal lesson plans. honestly. i don't' see how anyone would have the time or energy to do that for each and every period they teach, particularly those on the elem. level. it doesn't seem fair and i sympathize with those of you that have to do that.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

all my lesson plans go in that lakeshore free planning book they give out... i used to have to type up lessons for my formal observations, but this new school I am in, doesnt require that...

I wonder if this is a new thing in the city... Chat Icon

I also use the Lakeshore planner. I put little post its in the boxes, write the subject, the main idea of the lesson, things I want to remember, pages to do, graphic organizers (I write tiny!) and like a PP, I go back and write down things that made the lesson better. I keep my planners to refer to.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

I hand write my lesson plans on sheets of loose leaf. I'm not organized or well-prepared enough to type them up and I have no desire to. My method has worked for me so far.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

No, I write in my plan book. I also don't reteach things the same way year to year, each class is different and has different needs, so it would be a wast of my time.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

Nope. I've been teaching for 8 years so at this point it is all in my head or I fly by the seat of my pants. Chat Icon I only type lesson plans when I am being observed so basically twice a year.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

when I was a HS teacher, I didn't type them up (unless I had to), but I hand wrote them out with aim, motivation, development, summary and application.

now as special area intermediate - never.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

I use the Lakeshore planner and we have a reading program and math program that use manuals, so I'll put in the page, etc. What I write changes as the year progresses as well...in the beginning, I'll write more due to getting back into routines or notes on routines that work better with the current class, as well as when I do special projects, etc. On a "regular" day, I will just write when I am doing whatever sections in the guidebooks for the curriculum...before that, however, I wrote a TON of notes in my plan book, but like having it in a book rather than typing-although, I'd consider going digital if my teaching status changed (ie. not using these programs, teaching in a new school).

When I was being formally observed, I actually used a format that I learned in undergrad. that had everything I needed and added in things NYC would be looking for at that given time...it worked, no one ever complained and said they had a real picture of the lesson based on what I wrote...

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

I'm required to submit lesson plans to my supervisor since I'm untenured. They dont have to typed though. I have a weekly chart for each I fill in and keep them all in a binder.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

We are required to hand in lesson plans with objective, do now, guided practice, independent practice and homework for every class, every day by 9 am Monday. Oh, and I'm tenured.Chat Icon

I type them up for convenience (use the next year if I have the same preps) although I have the option to use a plan book. I teach on LI.

Yes - every lesson.

I have a separate binder for each unit with all of my lessons, homework assignments, and assesments.

Re: spinoff to lesson plans...

I have been teaching for 15 years and I just go with it! I think about what I am going to do and then I do it! I have been written up for not having a lesson plan but I don't care. My scholarship rate is off the charts and my students rock the ELA every year. My AP and Prinicpal can't say sh!t about what goes on in my room. I am well organized and have great classroom management.

I also take on the courses that others don't want (I know teach a section of American history to 9th graders because it was left over due to budget cuts)

I think LPs are good when you are starting out, but I also don't think that every person needs one.

ETA: Just because you put it on paper doesn't mean you are a better teacher! I hate that come back!

I'm the same way....it's more in my head, and my plan books is more of notes to myself. Being that I teach ESL, my lessons are not on a year to year cycle like most teachers, but more like a 3 year cycle. So by the time I was able to do a lesson again, I'd have thought of a better way to do it, so my lesson from 3 years ago was now no good.
When I first started teaching, I was in a district that required me to hand them in weekly, full blown plans for each class I taught. It was torture, and it took me HOURS to do it.

Now, my current district does not require me to hand them in at all other than formal observations, so waht I do is plan my week mentally, then actually put my "notes" for mon/tues/wed. Then on Wednesday I see where I am, and adjust my notes in my book for thursday and friday, and adjust my plans in my head.

that, or I fly by the seat of my pantsChat Icon
