Demo Lesson - Math (Update at bottom)

So I have an Algebra demo lesson on Thursday at a charter school in the bronx.

Any topic suggestions? She said I can pick what I want, there are about 10 students finishing up summer school that will be in the class.

Solving equations. There are 9,000,000 things you can do and they NEVER already know how to solve them.

Re: Demo Lesson - Math

I was thinking that was the easiest thing to do...because I don't want to go to advance and they don't know the skills.

LIke I was thinking of solving a system by graphing...but if they are good with slope-intercept form, I'm kinda screwed.

I didn't know how it would look to do something "basic"

First of all, let's be honest. They are in 9th grade Algebra summer school: they're not good with much. ESPECIALLY graphing equations.

You could do graphing equations in y = mx +b. Teach them that b = where you BEGIN and m = how you MOVE. m = 1/2 so you say MOVE UP 1 OVER 2.

KWIM?

LOL yea I guess they aren't the brightest bulbs. I haven't had to do a demo lesson in about 3 years so I am freaking out. I went with solving multi-step equations. I found a cute puzzle thing to do with them too.

Thanks for all your help.Chat Icon

Re: Demo Lesson - Math

So the demo went really well. The kids were so good! I stayed for about 30 minutes after for a formal interview.

She said she is passing my resume on to the principal who will call me for a final interview.

I know its not ideal, but the drive wasn't that bad.

I asked some questions about working late/crazy hours and duties and it wasn't as I read on the internet for chater schools...or shall they say.

I guess we will see what happens...fingers crossed please!

I haven't made a definite decision yet but if I got this it would be me weighing in perm sub at my old school vs teaching 9th grade math in the bronx at a charter school!
