Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

I am petrified that my dog would run off or run into the street or something. I never let him off a leash.

We don't unless she's inside a house. If we're outside in the backyard, she's always on her leash with us holding it, so she can't run under the fence or out in the open in the street. She's fine with it since that has been the case since we got her as a puppy at 6 weeks old.

I don't.. way too scared she'll see something to chase and bolt into the street. Plus she doesn't always come when called when she's following a scent.

Re: Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

When we only had Brinkley, we trained him over a year's time to come back to us with verbal commands, hand signal, and whistle. It enabled us to bring him places where off-leash was allowed and still trust him. But it was a very long process, and we only did it in uninhabited areas with no roads, for short periods of time.

Since Ginger can't be trusted off leash, and probably never will, those off-leash days with Brinkley are over. As close as we get are 30 foot retractables at the beach.

We trust them off leash in the backyard also but have worked hard to make sure there are no exits. And we go back there with them.

I would NEVER walk either of them near any road or cars off-leash.

Our lab responds to verbal commands to come back. If she is in my parents yard (no fence) not on a busy road backs up a nature preserve I let her off the leash. We let her off in the dog park at Coindre Hall, I worry more about other dogs than her running. Would never let her off leash walking on the street.

Re: Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

We let all 3 off leash most of the time for a brief period ex: from house to driveway to car or walk to the mailbox but, I wouldn't walk them w/o a leash. I've seen people do it but, I'm afraid of doing that. In the short distance they do it, they come back with verbal commands.

We also have an off lease dog area that we take them too also.

Re: Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

I never go for walks off leash... but when we go to the park across the street shes off the leash and usually shes so tired on the way back she will just walk with us...

Shes very laid back... there are lots of other animals in the neighborhood... cats, possums, racoons, etc ... they scare her more than she scares them... she would never chase one...

Only in the yard. I don't trust the little beast for nothing! Although someday I hope to for safety's sake. (And for obedience and agility competitions!)

Re: Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

We're getting a puppy soon and I grew up with dogs. This dog will only be off leash in our fenced yard and at a dog park. On LI there are so few places you can safely let Doggy off leash. You can let them "roam" on a retractable leash or a long line.

Trust is a disease.

never - personally I think it's irresponsible. I don't care how well-trained a dog is, they are animals and have natural instincts that we as humans will never fully understand.

Our dogs are usually off leash though I've always got one ready. They are 100% off leash trained. The boxer LOVES small prey like squirrels or rabbits and would love to run after them, but I've got control of him.

Cheap plug:
if anyone would like to enjoy that type of control with confidence, feel free to FM me for details.

Not me!
My yorkie will run in an instant! My toy poodle is always by my sis but I still dont trust him. I always feel that if he sees something interesting he can be off in a split second!

Re: Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

My dog is 100% off the leash trained but only if i am in front of my house.. I would never ever walk her off the leash ... ONLY because I have never trained her for that.. She would probably be able to do it but I am too nervous.. she does not leave my side EVER.. She is the most well behaved dog I have ever met.. I am not saying this because she is my dog , If my DD is 1/2 as good as this dog I will be the luckiest person alive.. Chat Icon

outside of our property, she's always on a leash. she's only 6 months, so i can't trust her 100%.

it actually really bothers me when other people have their dogs off the leash @ the dog park (where there's a leash law) because it means i have no control over whether or not she's going to be greeted by a strange dog. if he catches her in the wrong mood, she starts barking and lunging like a beast, and that's my dog's fault, right? not the idiot with the dog on the loose who's not paying attention and thinks it's fine.

no matter how trustworthy your dog is, there are other people who have their dogs on leashes because they're not trustworthy or they're in training. i'm one of those people. we appreciate when people keep their dogs on leashes.

I dont. Theres too much risk. Running into traffic, attacking another dog or biting someone. No way.

I have two. One is pretty good with listening and we used to let him off in parks but we noticed parents get nervous around any unleashed dog (he's a little one) so now we always have him leashed.

Our other one is a bit over a year and I don't think he'll ever be a good listener! He's so goofy and easily distracted that I would never let him off the leash.

One time he got out of the yard and FH found him across a busy street and when he tried to call him, the dog ran back across the street and into the yard. Thank god he did that but just picturing him crossing that street by himself gave me a heart attack!

yes, exactly my point in my post. Even though I know my dog is very friendly towards little kids and other dogs, as a stranger, it's simply a unleashed dog. I'd be nervous walking with a little toddler if a strange dog was walking unrestrained.

And I get nervous if other dogs are unleashed as well since I don't know their personality! One time I freaked out when a lab came barreling at my dogs. he was friendly but for a minute, my heart stopped!

Re: Who doesn't ever let their dog off the leash?

He goes off leash in our fenced yard, at the dog park and on the beach on Fire Island (where there is no parking lot for him to run into). If I see anything I don't like at the dog park, we do not stay. Every dog I have had has been a hunting breed and I am not sure if that has to do with it but I have never had a dog that I would let walk by my side off leash on the street. My dog would take off so fast after a rabbit or if he smelled a BBQ somewhere.

I only let her off of the leash in my fenced in back yard.
