dog always licking/cleaning himself

always. even after a bath. i know that they need to clean themselves but it's excessive and disgusting. his paws are red and raw from always cleaning them. it's not fleas, i've checked, he has had a bath a few weeks ago and i use flea/tick stuff monthly. any ideas?

He may have allergies. Either seasonal or allergic to the shampoo your using. Check with your vet. You can also give Benadryl, but always check with your vet first

ITA with the possibility of allergies, or even simple skin irritation. They don't always lick because they're cleaning; the area could feel itchy or irritated too. Check with the vet - hopefully it's something simple to fix.

Re: dog always licking/cleaning himself

definitely sounds like allergies.

my dog has the same thing.. been going on for over a year now.
she licks constantly and bites..
we tried everything , spent so much money on vet bills, and meds..
the only other option is for allergy shots.. which costs a lot.
so we have to just keep her on prednison.. which works wonders but its a steroid.

my dog doesn't have a seasonal allergery , we think she is allergic to dust mites

Re: dog always licking/cleaning himself

i just had my dogs at the vet, and he said that it's a VERRRY bad season for allergies for dogs for some reason. and they do get seasonal allergies, just like humans. he gave mine each an allergen shot that will last for about 6 weeks. you should bring yours... i bet they would do something similar for him and you'd see a change overnight. ava is sooo much more comfortable since that shot.

My dog ALWAYS is licking, but then I realized that under his hair he had a little rash. He got a shot at the vet to help with the itching and rash, it IS allergies! I changed little things at a time to see what he was allergic too bc I didnt want to spend $$ on going to a doggy dermatologist. I found out he is allergic to beef. I took all beef out of his diet and he is fine!

Re: dog always licking/cleaning himself

last season he didn't have this... and it's been going on for a few months now(since summer), so can it still be considered seasonal allergies?

the only difference i can think of is a switch from puppy food to regular food, same company though. its a chicken meal, oatmeal, rice mix but nutro natural choice.

It's definitely allergies. My dog is 2 and this is the worst it's been for him too. His paws are raw from the licking. Contact your vet and ask what you can give him for his allergies. It's environmental allergies (pollen and such) like humans get. Our noses itch but their paws do.
