Injured feral cat
We have a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood and DH and I have been feeding 2 of them on a regular basis for about a year now, we call them Ittie and Teeny. Well, Teeny showed up at our door a few days ago with a bad gash on her face. We said we'd keep our eye on it and if it got worse we'd try to catch her and bring her to a vet. When we saw him/her last night, it looked like half her face was missing We know we have to catch her and bring her to a vet but here are my concerns:
First off, how do I catch a feral cat? We've been feeding them for a year and Ittie will let us pet her but Teeny is still very skittish and will run a few feet away.
Secondly-and I don't mean to sound heartless-her injury looks like it will cost a fortune to treat. DH and I have an infant and can't afford to spend a lot of money on a stray cat, as much as we'd like to. Do you think the vet will give us a discount? Is there any organization I can contact that may do it for free or help us?
And finally, even if we do catch her and are able to get her treated for a reasonable price, what then? Do I just re-release her and risk her getting injured again? Keeping her is not an option, I already have two anti-social cats and an infant. I would hate to bring her to a shelter and have her end up euthanized. Is there a no-kill shelter in or around Western Nassau that would take her?
I really don't want to leave her/him and not help as I am a huge animal lover and the guilt would just eat away at me.
