Gym situation...who gets the machine?

Okay, so I'm at the gym and a guy is texting to the side of the machine. I waited a minute to see if he was about to go on. I proceeded to go use the machine and he stops me....he says ummmm excuse me but I was just ABOUT to use that machine. I looked at him and said....you were on your phone and just did my thing. He kept giving me dirty looks the entire time, staring at me and saying things.....I mean couldn't he just use another machine? Should I have just let him have the machine or did I do the right thing? What's the etiquette? Tia

Re: Gym situation...who gets the machine?

Thats tough because I know in between reps I will get up and do something next to the machine (not text lol...push ups or squats or a stretch). I think its important to ask people if they are using a piece of equipment if they are in very close promixity to it.

IMO by texting he made it clear he wasn't working out at the time. It was rude of him to make comments to you while you were on the machine.

In the end, I think its a gym etiquette question that has no real clear answer as to who's right. However, he was wrong to make comments.

Sorry, but I think he had a right to use it. If he was doing heavy weights, he'd need about 2-3 minute rest between sets. I think the proper etiquette would have been to ask first if someone is right next to the machine. And he probably couldn't just go use another machine, workouts should be done in a specific order to be most effective.

However, if he hadn't used it at all yet, then he shouldn't have had a problem with you using it.

If it were me, I would have done one set, and asked if I could work in with him (do 1 set, while he rests)

Re: Gym situation...who gets the machine?

When in doubt I usually ask and depending on the type of machine ask if I can work in between sets

If i see someone next to a machine, I will usually ask if they are using it or plan to be. I am a wimp though and don't like to step on anyone's toes

Re: Gym situation...who gets the machine?

I always ask. There is this girl at my gym who leaves her belongs on all of the machines and then jumps to do something else as if to mark her spot. I find it just so incredibly rude and just use the same machine out of spite. So in a situation like that I think etiquette doesn't matter!

Re: Gym situation...who gets the machine?

I often do supersets which require me to do one exercise and immediately do a different one. I often lose my spot on a machine because I walk away to do another exercise. Obviously I can't get annoyed but I do always ask if someone is stll working...if i can work in etc. I appreciate it when people do it for me.
