Runners: Need advice...feeling defeated

I started running a few weeks ago. I guess I pushed myself too hard because now I have an ankle injury and my muscles are SO sore every morning when I wake up. They are sore to the point where I am walking funny and sort of limping. This is after running 2 miles Tuesday and Wednesday and then only 1 mile on Sunday (I was supposed to do 3 miles, but I literally could not keep going because I was in so much pain.)

I am feeling defeated and not sure what I should do. I think I am going to take the next few days off to recover. Maybe do some yoga? Chat Icon

a day until your more experienced. I felt

horrible first 2-3 times after jogging.. but

shins and ankles got used to it after a

while but need to take day off in beginning.

DONT beat yourself up. your not defeated...keep it up!

Re: Runners: Need advice...feeling defeated

I feel your pain!! I pushed myself too hard and now I have a knee injury. I haven't run in over 3 weeks now and I hate it. All because I wanted so bad to push myself to get faster. Now I just hurt my training. Please take a few days off!! I wish I had taken more time off and maybe I still wouldn't be sidelined. Its so hard but you really have to listen to your body (even if it means taking a week or even more off). Hang in there!!!

I recently posted the same problem. Either take a couple of days off, walk, or run at a very very slow pace (I ran at 4.7 mph).

Good Luck....

It's so hard to stop when you are trying to improve yourself. It almost feels like you are going in reverse.

Re: Runners: Need advice...feeling defeated

definitely take a break from running. when you feel better ease back into it slowly. I never had ankle pain- could it be your sneakers maybe?

Definitely rest for a few days!

I have been running for awhile, yet I was pushing myself harder and harder, and I have a stress fracture and am on crutches for 6 weeks and won't be able to run for a few months. Chat Icon

Thanks for all the advice!!! Chat Icon

It is frustrating when you just want to run, but I know I just have to listen to my body and take it easy for a little bit. I know if I push it too hard I'll end up with an even worse injury that will keep me out of the game longer.

Definately rest. Your body is telling you that you need it.

Also, make sure you drink enough water. It is very easy to get dehydrated.

I recommend resting for two days. then do a one mile run at a slower pace than you would normally do. Rest one day after that. then resume your schedule.

I agree with all of the previous posts about trying to rest as much as possible. However, I also feel your pain in that I too hurt myself running/pushing too hard (shin splints and possible tiny fractures). Since I'm too stubborn to completely rest, I've been walking on my treadmill, alternating between high inclines and lower inclines at a faster pace and I actually feel like I've gotten some good workouts in. Plus, according to the calorie counter on my treadmill, I've burned more calories. Although, I don't usually rely too much on those calorie counters. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I think one of the most important things a runner can do is run slow. It is so important to have easy days. Elite runners run slow! although their slow is my 5K pace! LOL

I would give it a day (if your ankle is better) and like others have said, start slow and low mileage.
