What to expect at a D&C

Hi ladies,

My D&C is scheduled for Friday and I just wanted to know if you can tell me what to expect? I'm having it done at North Shore and I'm wondering how long I can expect to be there after the procedure for recovery. I know I have to get there an hour before and the actual procedure is only about 15 minutes.

How did you guys feel afterwards? Did you have cramping, a lot of bleeding, etc?

My husband is actually away on business (bad timing, I know! My mom is taking me for the procedure) so I'm wondering if you think I should stay at my parent's house that night? I have a DD who is 2 so that might impact your advice.

I was at the hospital probably two hours all together. The procedure was 10 minutes. When I woke up I felt a lot cramping and they gave me painkillers through the Iv. I did not feel pain the rest if the day. I had minimal bleeding and was fine. However, here is my advice, i was extremely tired the rest of the day so maybe the help with your DD would be nice. Also a couple of days later i was an idiot and shoveled a little, which caused a little more cramping and bleeding. So I wouldnt suggest lifting too much which could be another reason for the help. Do you have to stay at your parents probably not but I think it would be a good idea

I had mine there too in the ambulatory center. I was there also about 2 hrs in total. When you come out, drink a lot. They won't let you go home until you pee.

I was sore and had cramping. Minimal bleeding. DH had to help me get dressed when we left.

I would definitely stay at your parents. They made DH sign a paper that he would be with me the next 24 hours. They just want to ensure you are ok. I was kinda groggy until that night from the anesthesia. Let your parents help you with DD. You'll need to rest up. Sending lots of

I had it done at North Shore too. The procedure is actually around 45 minutes, at least mine was. I didn't have a lot of bleeding immediately after, I had more the week after. I would definitely stay at your parents house or have someone stay with you. You'll probably feel ok, just some cramping, maybe some nausea. I know the anesthesia made me nauseous and then they gave me percoset for the pain which made me really sick. I definitely would not have wanted to be alone that night so I highly recommend you stay with someone you feel comfortable with, even if it's just for emotional support.

My d&c wasn't bad at all. It was more emotional than anything else. Good luck

ETA: I would stay at your parents just in case. I was told no heavy lifting (including my 13mo DD) so my DH had to do a lot of the work with the baby. You'll definitely need an extra set of hands even if you feel fine. I am so sorry you have to go through this.
