My job update
So I got a call from the principal today. (The school I did the 4 demos for and 3 interviews)
Anyway, she wants to get me processed as a sub so I can start teaching the class. She doesn't know if they will hire me because of the teacher cuts in the city that is suppose to be happening.
It seems like a great offer 1) teaching 2) a steady job but am I really getting screwed in this deal?
I mean I'll be doing everything a teacher does for the rest of the year but no benefits, etc?
What do you think?

Re: My job update
I would honestly see if you could get the benefits...if it's an NYC school, you can buy back the time into your pension later..I had the option when I was a day to day sub..I know if it's NYC, you can try and ask for F-status (higher pay rate and benefits)...is this a replacement/new class or what? How was the position advertised? After all that work, they BETTER have hired you-you jumped through hoops and I'm glad but you know you are your own best advocate...

Re: My job update
Thanks for writing.
It is a new visions school, if that makes a difference.
I would be a replacement. The teacher that was there was fired...that is all I got out of it. The job was advertised on Craigslist.
It is a newer school, right now it is only 9-11. Next year, they need to add a 4th teacher as well.
What does F status mean?

Re: My job update
F-status pay is quite a bit more than sub pay- but I am not sure the amount. It tends to be retirees who do F-status, at least the ones in my school. I don't know about benefits- the retirees do it more for the money.
Seniority in NYC is on its way out (whether or not that's good is a topic for another thread ) but that might work in your favor. It seems that the most recent bill heavily favors new hires because the criteria won't really be relevant to newer teachers.

Re: My job update
Take it! If you can get into the system that way then take it! If you work for 30 consecutive days, you are entitled to benefits.

Just find out from the payroll person or chapter leader, though- it's 30 days in the same assignment. That happened to me- I had the same program for about a month and a half, or almost 30 work days, when I went in and was told I had a new program. This was in '96, though, and things may have changed.
