Choker or harness?

Yogi pulls like crazy when I take him on walks. Especially if he sees a bird. And, he is very strong. So, he pulls hard! I did training with him 3 years ago and the trainer said not to walk him on a harness because it will give him the strength in the strongest part of his bod to pull, his chest. But the choker isn't preventing him from pulling either. What do you walk your larger dog with? Yogi is almost 60 pounds.

I use this check collar. She's good with it. She's still learning though since she's a puppy.

prong collar because my dog looks like this and comes from a weight pulling family

When we had a GSP, Buddy, we used a Halti, its a harness that goes over the dogs muzzle. Worked well for us



If you're using a chain choker you have to put it close to the top of his head and it should be easier to control him

we have the no pull harness for our little dog but they make it for big dogs also. I like it bc it teaches them not to pull without choking them.

Choker. It hink harness are a band aid to the problem. it might be easier for you but they do not learn very good on the harnesses. I have a 80lb pit/lab mix and it it wasnt for the choke I would not be able to walk him cause he pulls

also you have to know how to train him to walk. we switch directions with a quick pull to the collar each time he pulls and after a few times he settles down and walks ......if you continue to do this they will learn and stop pulling.

Don't use a regular harness, harnesses were originally created for pulling. You can use the no pull harness with the hook in front like someone else recommended, the prong collar (my choice), the head collar, or the choke collar. I am not a huge fan of the choke collar because if your dog pulls a lot like mine sometimes does, the choke collar does choke which day after day could could tracheal damage. Everyone's favorite tool though is different. If you buy one and it doesn't work for you, try another until you find the right fit for you and your dog. I would definitely work on training your dog to walk on a loose leash though. It makes the walk more pleasant and comfortable for everyone. :o) Good Luck.

I highly recommend the easy walk no pull harness. It is designed to help with the exact problem you are describing. I used to use it on my 70 pound lab mix. I switched to the gentle leader head collar bc my dog will also jump up. It works well but it requires some time for the dog to get use to it. The harness you just put on and go.

We were using the no-pull harness that clips in the front for our 85 pound, strong girl Ginger. We always intended for it to be a temporary solution and to reinforce good behavior over time.

But I admit, we got lazy. A few weeks ago, I noticed a rough spot on the side of Ginger's front leg like up by where her 'shoulder' is. It didn't take me long to find it's mate on the other side and I realized the harness has been chafing her.

We stopped using the harness immediately and went back to the regular flat collar. I had already trained both dogs to walk on my left side (you want a challenge? Try walking 150 pounds at the same time ) and when Ginger would pull, I would stop. As soon as she let any slack into the leash whatsoever, we would walk again.

Walks were LONG doing it this way. But we are seeing great results. We take her out alone with the intention of walking a very short distance but giving ourselves lots of time to do it, so we can afford to stop whenever she pulls.

I think the name of the game here is consistency. If you don't do it the same way with every walk every day, it will take much longer to solve. Good luck, I know it's not easy!!
