Have you ever been let down by a REFERENCE
When applying for a job or a place to stay? You put down someone you THINK would be a good reference and it turns out they don't have very nice things to say about you and purity much give you a bad reference..

How would one know if they gave a poor reference? None of my references have ever called me saying, "Sorry, but I talked $hit about you."

Re: Have you ever been let down by a REFERENCE
I was applying to colleges and asked one of my HS teachers to write a reference and it went straight into my college file which was reviewed by my high school's Guidance Counselor who was responsible for sending the transcripts/college materials for students..
She met with every student to discuss college and in reviewinf my file, came across the reference letter and told me it wasn't a letter I should include. Although she didn't physically show me the letter, she did quote that the teacher said somthing like "although __is a proficiient student in __ subject, she isn't the best student I've taught - however I have confidence her skills will only grow as a student at your university.."
Needless to say I was and didn't include that recommendation letter in my apps!!! After that experience, I made sure every reference letter I secured for a job, grad school application, etc was absolutely glowing and even asked my recommenders if I could read it once they sent it..

You should always confirm with the person that they will be a reference for you. Never just put someone down -- make sure they know in advance and ask for their permission. That gives them the chance to decline if they don't want to say positive things.

Re: Have you ever been let down by a REFERENCE
I make sure that I ask my references in advance if they mind me using them as a reference. I used to verify references (back in the day when people actually gave them and not just verified dates of employment ) and it was shocking what people would say. Always made me wonder why an applicant would even list them. Here's a classic example:
I was checking references for a direct care counselor at AHRC. This person listed someone that she had done summer work for at a horse stable. When I called for a reference the woman said that the applicant had neglected and KILLED HER HORSE and she couldnt recommend her to care for living things

Agree.
To answer the question, I've gotten every job I've wanted so I don't think so. I've heard some of the things my references have said after initially being hired from my boss & have since seen my file. All good on my end.
Our company policy is to confirm dates of employment only but I know managers have served as references for old staff.

Same here! I always ask in advance. But how did you find out someone gave you a bad review??

No. I hand pick my references and I ask them first.
