Speech therapy Moms, esp CSE Moms

Do they never write the method of therapy on an IEP? My DS is apraxic and is going into K in the fall. They said they never write the method on the IEP (specifically PROMPT) so they will try their best to give him PROMPT but will not budge on guaranteeing he will get it. He will get speech 3x a week in sept (2 individ, 1 group) The goals will be written by his current PROMPT therapist who will use lots of phrases like tactile kinesthetic prompts which is PROMPT jargon but I am afraid of him not getting the right kind - by someone trained and/or certified. Or mildly trained which doesn't make me feel very good about it. They insist they are not bound by law to write it and cannot bc they cannot guarantee it. I'm talking about CSE. Any advice or thoughts?

That is true. They do not have to write up prompt speech therapy on the IEP. I work for a district as an OT and this issue has come up before it's been discussed at our staff meetings. The won't put it in the IEP because they are not required to do so by law and it is just one specific type of speech therapy. There are several ways to treat apraxia. Its hard to prove that that one methodology is what is helping the child make gains. Also Prompt Certified therapists are few and far between. It Is a very intensive continuing Ed program that few therapists complete. I know several Prompt Trained therapists. They attend a lengthy 3 day continuing Ed course and get a certificate to use prompt techniques in therapy sessions. If something goes in an IEP, it is part of a legal document that the district must uphold. Chances are slim that any of the districts own speech therapists are Prompt Certified. They probably see very few cases of true apraxia. We have one speech therapist who is prompt trained. If they put Prompt speech therapy in the IEP and they look to contract a Certified speech therapist to come and treat a student at school they are basically setting themselves up to be out of compliance if they can't find one.

DS got additional speech on his IEP mid year. We wanted to add prompt therapy. The SD told me that they don't diferenciate between speech therapies. So on his IEP he is getting 5 speech sessions. 3 are prompt but it's not detailed. They told me that it does not matter the "method". It's considered speech.
