autism and medication

Sorry for crashing on this board, I have been trying to get my sister to join but she thinks I am nuts for posting on a message board LOL

Who prescribed medication for your DC if he or she has autism?

My nephew is on two medications, I have to get the names of them. I had an honest conversation with my sister yesterday and finally told her that the medications are NOT working at all. They are "anti psychotic" medications (as labeled by her psychiatrist). My nephew's behavior (screaming and stimming basically all day every day) has not improved at all PLUS he gets horrific cramping in his feet and legs that he cannot deal with.

My sister finally agreed with me but she doesn't know what else to do as the psychiatrist will not give her any other options.

I know every child is different but if you were successful with a medication, would you mind sharing it with me and who prescribed it (meaning what kind of doctor)?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and help!

My friends son does B12 shots, rather than traditional medications. She says it works for him.

Has your sister tried any supplements or special diets?

Not at all Chat Icon

i try to give her information but all he likes to eat is rice, apple sauce and bread! every, single, day! so she is scared to mess with that.

I will mention the shots to her!

Re: autism and medication

DS is not on medication.

But I massage DS legs. He toe walk a lot. I had a 2 yo with muscle calf definition. So I massage and do light stretches to his calves to loosen up his muscles.

I hate the brushing but I do also "compressions" on his body. It mimics a weighted vest and make him refocus and regroup. It "grounds" him.

My nephew is 10, its so hard to get him to stay still for the massage, brushing techniques but once she can get him to do it - he seems to like them.

We're very new on this journey, but DS is not on any medication currently. He does stim a lot also, but I feel a short time in OT and assistance in social situations that cause anxiety with a SEIT has made a difference for him very quickly. His OT is working on a sensory diet for him, and in his case, she does think dealing with a lot of his sensory issues will help with the stimming.

Honestly, I'd rather exhaust therapy and dietary changes before putting a young child on meds, but that's JMO. Unless he was having seizures or something like that, that probably would require medication.

If your nephew receiving any services from the school district or EI or just getting medication?

Oh yes he is in a special school in Queens. He is 10 years old, non verbal - my sister has gone through all of that. . . she just started putting him on medication about a year ago and he has already been on a few different kinds. It was basically her last resort but he was hurting himself and others at that point.

I honestly wish my sister would join a message board, or some kind of group - b/c all of the information I read from you guys - she doesn't know about until I tell her. Her school is helpful, they love my nephew there - but I feel like at this point they have kind of given up and don't expect any improvement - just trying not to let him get any worse. No one wants to try anything NEW.

PS - I dont say any of this to her, I know how hard it must be for her without someone from the outside butting in randomly.

Re: autism and medication

Does her school offer a parent support group?

Has she looked into that?

DS' school has one once a month. It's voluntary. Whoever comes, comes!

Tell her to get a nutritionist. The diets can really help, not always, but it's worth a shot.

My son was allergic to soy. He was a totally different kid after I took it out of his diet.
