some people DO NOT need to own a animal

My friend on FB ask for help on her dog who was having accidents in the house. (first time owner) someone replies and tells her to leave the leash on the dog at all times cause that is what the trainer told her. WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe they meant tandem the dog to yourself. A trainer told us about that for a shy foster dog we had.

i dont know why you would leave a leash on the dog at all times unless you can grab the dog and walk it outside if he displays signs of going to the bathroom like circling?

I think that is what they were probably talking about. Instead of having to crowd the dog's space by grabbing at it to pick it up, you can pick up the leash and guide the dog to follow you outside to relieve itself..

That's actually a very common practice and not harmful at all. They're not saying to tie the dog up by the leash at all times, just to leave the leash on the collar.

I've also heard of doing this to desensitise the dog to the leash, so it doesn't go nuts whenever it sees it.

I'm assuming you took this to mean tie the dog up at all times, otherwise I'm not really sure why this is such a bad thing?

our trainor recommend keeping the leash on when Maggie was a puppy as well. I opted for a smaller looking leash (About 7 inches long) so it was easy to grab for certain training situations such as counter surfing and not jumping on guests.

Hmmm interesting. I think I might try this with my dog. She goes bananas when you even get out a plastic bag since she associates that with a walk.

So many people have told me to do this with my pup in order to get him outside quickly. I tried but all he does is chew on it like its a toy.

Jessie has the same reaction to a plastic bag too...

we would leave the leash on her when we first brought her home because she wouldnt walk... she would dig her heels in with the leash on... so she got used to it eventually...

We did it with our pups .. We didn't tie them up - just had a short lead attached to their collars. They still had the run of the joint.
It absolutely helped them get used to being on a lead.. and when they'd start to 'go' in the house it was easy to just grab and take them out making "potty" training much easier!

Re: some people DO NOT need to own a animal

The only problem I could see with having a leash or collar on in the house is the choking hazard. Ginger almost pulled a piece of heavy furniture on top of herself by getting her collar caught on a knob.

I believe I posted about it here, but in a helpful non-judgmental way, to educate others on what they may not have thought of or realize. I think that's the best way to help in most situations.
