Service Dog Stops Seizures for Former Officer

Can Do Canines trained Brody to use VNS device

While some service dogs have been trained to help people with epilepsy detect when a seizure is about to happen, one Twin Cities dog is helping his human stop seizing after the episodes start.

Most people who suffer from epilepsy can’t detect when a seizure is coming on, but they can use a device called the Vergus Nerve Stimulation, which reduces the number and length of seizures and can even stop them with the help of a special magnet -- but the magnet is useless without a companion to help.

That’s where Brody comes in. With his help, Terri Krake said she feels free to live the life she deserves.

“I am truly blessed,” she said.

Krake was an officer in New Orleans 25 years ago when she suffered a brain injury during an explosion that resulted in severe seizures. Within the past three years, her seizures had become so severe they became a prisoner in her own home.

“It’s messy and embarrassing,” Krake said. “So, when you have this sort of disability, you tend to isolate yourself.”

That is, until one year ago when she was introduced to Brody, who is specifically trained to fit her needs. Krake had a VNS devise implanted to help control her seizure, and Brody has the black magnet key on his collar.

When Krake has a seizure, Brody will lay across her chest and place the magnet next to the VNS device, which then interrupts and stops the seizure.

So far, Krake says Brody has come to her aid 55 times and she credits him with saving her life.

Can Do Canines said they have presented doctors with information about how well Brody is doing with Krake and said they hope to soon be training more dogs like him.
