Toenail fungus question- gross
Has anyone every lost a toenail due to a fungus? I think I have a fungus- the nail got all nasty and thick etc- and now all of a sudden the nail is lifting away and just seems dead- like a shell- and I see a new nail coming in underneath it.
So did the fungus kill the nail? And now this new nail will have it too I assume?
Ugh- the drama with this toenail has been goign on forever! I just want it to end!

Re: Toenail fungus question- gross
happend to my sister . her toenail didn't completely fall off but it lifted about 75%
i got it too but i just had a couple of white spots on my nail so i went to the podiatrist asap. he told me to buy fungoid tincture (its OTC) you cannot wear nail polish at all and apply it twice a day to the nail or the skin if the nail fell off and the skin is exposed.
it cleared up in about a month. went for a pedicure in the same place where i thought i got it the first time and got it again so now no more nail polish (thank god open toe shoe season is almost over)

I didn't lose the nail. I went on a prescription that cleared it up. I haven't had a problem since. Good luck.

We make some really cool compound prescriptions for this type of thing, have your podiatrist get a hold of us.

This has happened to me a few times, I am a runner and unfortunately lose toenails all the time. Yes the nail on top will prob just fall off b/c it is dead and the new one underneath should just grow back normally

Re: Toenail fungus question- gross
I have heard that the new nail will grow back just the way that the old one was. A friend of mine had toenail fungus and she had the podiatrist remove the nail, and he told her the new one would grow back the same and it ended up having.
If you don't want to take any prescription meds (I believe they can have some major side effects) you can try getting an OTC liquid and apply it to the nail bed while the nail is gone and the new one is growing back. More of the nail bed will be exposed then and you'd have a better chance of treating the fungus lurking there.
Also look into some non-medicinal remedies. Tea Tree Oil works very well from what I have heard. I had fugus on my big toe nail and used tea tree oil, but DH hated how it smelled and it irritated his asthma so I didn't use it as often as recommended so I didn't see the full results.
