I have a dog and 2 kids and will only get leather as well! I use orange scented wipes and wipe them down. Microfiber and material holds smell and stains.

I've got 2 dogs and 2 cats.... and also will only have leather couches.
Much easier to clean - don't hold on to animal smells.
My cats are declawed on their front paws, so scratching the furnature isn't an issue for me. I do get little puncture holes from time to time from their back nails, but nothing crazy.

Re: Leather Couches & pets
agree with the above posters. with pets and children (and/or with people prone to spilling!), leather is much easier.

This is the main reason I want leather. The thought of pet dander and dust makes me
Just afraid the leather wil get ripped or torn by dog claws. Seems like this is not an issue from what everyone here is saying.
Thanks everyone.

This was our issue. Our pit, Lucy, thought for some reason our couch wasn't comfortable enough. So she'd dig at it with her paws to... fluff it up I guess? Of course we stop her whenever we catch her, but she has free run of the house when we're not home. Well, she finally broke through the leather. It took her about 3 years, but she did it. And now we need a new couch. But honestly, we'll probably do leather again. Our couch was second hand so we weren't too concerned about it and like pp mentioned it's worlds better for the dog hair! Just make sure that you stay on that pup and don't let him/her claw at it.

I've always had leather couches with my dogs and never a problem with scratches.

Add me to the list. Never thought we'd let the dogs up on the leather couch but we did, and it's been totally fine. Ginger is on it the most and she's 85 pounds, no issues.

Re: Leather Couches & pets
I have new leather couches and my pit mix has scratched one really bad! She does the scratching the thing to I guess "fluff it up" before laying down and I have 2 spots with deep scratches. They seemed to have happened right after she was groomed so maybe her nails were jagged after being cut? I don't know. The couches are dark brown so it's pretty noticeable.
Something to think about - maybe a lighter color leather won't show scratches as badly if they happen...

Re: Leather Couches & pets
My dog has scratched the leather furniture but they are not to deep and using leather conditioner has helped to fade them. Honestly I would still get a leather couch scratches and all...I could not imagine trying to get the dog hair off a fabric couch. My dog is a shedding machine!

My dog is a Cavalier and sheds a lot. This was my concern along with dust and other dirt. We bought 2 leather couches today at Raymore and Flanagan
