Day 3 of Kindergarten and DS is still crying UPDATE

He has cried everyday, the teacher assures me that he is great after a minute, but it is so hard. I have been on the teacher end(in daycare and pre-schools) of the crying child so I know they do stop fairly quickly usually and blah, blah, blah, but as his mom it is hard to do. Today DH took him and he said DS was screaming, pulling away etc. I just feel so bad.

I don't know what I want to come of this post, maybe just some support....some ideas of what to do although I don't feel like there is anything that can be done except waiting it out.

At 3 years old he went to nursery school twice a week, he was fine at first then cried for days, then stopped for a few months, then cried for days, repeat. Last year he went to pre-k 5 days a week (1/2 days) he was fine at first then cried for days, then stopped for a few months, then cried for days, repeat.

He also talks about things he did in school and says they were fun and it was good, but that he hates it! It's sad and frustrating and I just want him to like it.....I want him to be happy there...he is smart, makes friends easily, enjoys learning and gym and arts & crafts. 99% of the other kids go running into school like it is no big deal and there is DS crying. I feel so bad about it. Chat Icon

Thanks for listening if you made it this far.

Update:
Well Friday was a bad day, ge gave DH a very hard time going in and told me he cried at lunch. When I picked him up the teacher said he cried more than the other days and she shared with me that her daughter is going thru the same thing, which was comforting. We read The Invisible String and The Kissing Hand all weekend and today my mom took him to school and he was better. He still cried a little, but it was better. I think by Friday he was completely exhausted from the new routine. He also doesn't like loud places so i'm sure the lunch room is a bit overwhelming for him.

I just wanted to say thank you again to the few of you who supported me and gave hugs and suggestions. I really appreciate that and it definitely helped us both. Chat Icon

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that. *I* feel like crying! There was a little boy in DD#2's pre-k class yesterday that was like that...so upsetting. I don't have any advice, but I'm sure speaking with his teacher would be reassuring; like you, she's seen it all.

Re: Day 3 of Kindergarten and DS is still crying

Sounds like he misses you terribly. I don't have a child this age, but I was like this in 2nd grade. My mom started a new job after having been home with us when we were little. I knew she wasn't home waiting for me, and that is why I was upset.

I would maybe try giving him something of yours to put in his pocket. And whenever he got upset, he can put his hand in his pocket and know that he is still close to you and that you will see him soon.

I hope it gets better!Chat Icon

Thank you! That is a great idea. Yesterday he said "mommy, when I was at lunch today, I missed you so much I started to cry a little" Chat Icon Today I put a little love note in his lunch and some munchkins to cheer him up Chat Icon

I'm going to try that, thank you.

This is going to be my son, I know it. He loves school once he's there but he's very attached to his caretakers and hates to be left "alone" so to speak. When starting in a new place it takes him a couple of weeks to warm up. I hope Ryan's doing better soon Chat Icon

This book is great! Our district gave it out at orientation to read to the kids before the first day and then read it to them too to help with the first day jitters. They had us trace our kids hand, and put a kiss on the cut out with lipstick and tie a string on so they could wear it the first day. This way if they got sad, they could press the kiss to their face. Maybe you can do something like that for him? I feel so bad for him and you.Chat Icon

The Kissing Hand definately helped us last year. My son liked school for the first week but once rules came into play and he realized he had to go everyday he lost it. The social worker and his teacher literally had to pry him off of me in the hallway oneday. Unfortunately my son cried most of his way through kindergarten...including the last weekChat Icon . I was very active in his classroom last year which was nice b/c he got to see me but without fail he cried every single time I left. We started to read the book and we all kissed hands before he left each day. He would mostly cry before school and tell me he didn't want to go. Then he would cry a little when he got then but then the aide assured me he was fine for the rest of the day. I don't know if you have a little one at home but I know that was a HUGE problem with us. He couldn't understand why his brother got to stay home with me all day. I know how hard it is BELIEVE ME and I feel for you. I always felt guilty sending him to schoolChat Icon . This year, so far so good but there's no telling what the future holdsChat Icon .

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sorryChat Icon I have no advice only Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I have been a mess all week because DD started kindergarten and I dont know what I would have done if she had been upset too - she was fine.

I really hope he gets over his sadness soon. I do put a little note with a picture on it inside DD's lunch box and I am going to tape a picture on there too as she told me today that she does miss me at lunchtime .

Re: Day 3 of Kindergarten and DS is still crying

To those who responded, thank you so much for the suggestions, the hugs and the support. It is so hard to see your child hurting, but I think he was probably pretty exhausted by yesterday so i'm sure that aded to his sadness.

I feel a little better today, yesterday was bad. DS had the worst day yet and the thought of him siting at the lunch table crying is heartbreaking to me, but I know it will get better. I'm getting my hands on a copy of The Kissing Hand and The Invisible String TODAY and i'm going to send him to schoo with something of mine. Just have to think of what. I had put a little love note in his lunch yesterday and I will keep doing that as well. All I want is for my baby to be happy.

Thank you again!Chat Icon

Your mom taking him might help also. My kids tend to fuss less when others would drop them off.

Are you very matter of fact about it. I realized that with my kids when I got upset or showed them I was sad about it, it made it worse. When I told them, I have to go to work and had a neutral response to that, they were better and more matter of fact about it.

Good luck, it is very hard to see or hear about them being upset.

Re: Day 3 of Kindergarten and DS is still crying UPDATE

My daughter is doing the same thing going to school. She was fine last year (2yo program at Pixie). Went to camp over the summer and all of a sudden HATES going to school.

DH and I both took off work yesterday so we could drop her off and pick her up and I literally had to carry her into the classroom and leave her screaming/crying "Please don't leave me mommy!!!" Oh it was so heartbreaking.

The teacher said she was fine within minutes and she was fine when we picked her up. I asked her if she had fun in school and she said no. I asked her if she played with anyone and she said no one wanted to play with her. My MIL dropped her off today and she did the same exact thing. One of the moms in the class tried to encourage her DD to talk to my DD but Kaydyn wanted nothing to do with it.

It's absolutely heartbreaking and hopefully they adjust to the school routine soon. I don't think my MIL will be able to hold herself together if Kaydyn cries every single day.
