Any Dog Experts
Hi I'm new to this board and hoping for some help. I am looking to adopt a puppy within the next few months and would like some suggestions because I don't even know where to start. I had an american bulldog who I loved dearly but would like a dog who doesn't shed quite as much. This is what I'm looking for:
-Friendly with kids (most important) -Guard dog -Doesn't shed to much (I don't have time to vacuum daily) -Larger breed
Any suggestions would be great so that I can start my research. I'm hoping to adopt from a shelter or rescue.
Thanks!

I am definitely not an expert, but I do want to applaud you for adopting from a shelter or rescue!!
We've always just gone to the shelter (North Shore Animal League) and got the puppy that we fell in love with - and who fell in love with us... My only requirement was a larger breed dog (we ended up with one large, one medium).
Good luck in your search!!

Re: Any Dog Experts
Well, the shedding part aside, many lab mixes would fit the bill. I have one and she is AMAZING with kids, alerts us whenever anyone is approaching the house (by barking - people who don't know her are taken aback sometimes, but those who DO know her realize that she is just barking in hopes that the person come inside faster to play with her), and was about 60 lbs when we got her, a little overweight, and is closer to 54 now - larger medium dog, in my opinion.
But she sheds a TON.
Maybe you can find some sort of poodle mix? Poodles are great, smart dogs that don't shed!
My dog is a rescue - we have had her for over two years now and she was at least two when we adopted her and it was the best thing we ever did!

I know you said you want a puppy but since you mentioned rescue, I tought I'd mention....greyhound. They are great with kids, super friendly, don't shed a lot. Not really a guard dog though. If you're interested, let me know and I'll tell you more.

Standard poodle. amazing with children , dont shed at all. larger breed. I hope you can find a rescue for them.. I would also go to the local shelters and see whats avail.. Go to the kill shelters first and see.. There is a dog on here that needs to be adopted . I just read the post.. "Lucky" is the poor babys name.,

I agree with standard poodle or a mix with a poodle (although probably a challenge to find in the shelters). My friend had a Golden-Doodle and she did not shed. They need regular grooming though. Maybe look into some poodle rescues?
I have a cocker/poodle mix and he is the mushiest, most kid friendly pooch ever. Very low shedder but NOT a guard dog and is pretty small (18 lbs).

Re: Any Dog Experts
I've been researching Wheaten Terriers. They are an excellent breed. I too would like to go non shedding for my next dog. I showed my DH a pic of a Wheaten and he said "WTH is that?" LOL I said not everyone can be as beautiful as an AB Can I ask how old your AB was when they died? My girl is 9 now.

I have a Portuguese Water Dog, and they fit most of your criteria (although not sure how good they would be as actual guard dogs...their barks would scare, but you probably couldn't get them to actually hurt someone). They are pretty large (45-60 lbs), don't shed, and very child-friendly.

I second the PWD. And while I agree that they normally wouldn't hurt a fly, ours is very protective of 'her' people so in that sense she is absolutely a good guard dog, and SUPER SUPER smart. When I'm home alone she barks if anyone comes to the door, but is also amazing with my 3 year old nephew, and has been nothing but gentle with him since he was born. They are the BEST dogs!

Thats some face on the Wheaten Terrier I actually had to give my AB away when I was put on emergency bed rest during my pregnancy. I was the hardest thing I've had to do and though its been 2 years I can't tell you how much I miss her. She went to a very nice family who adore her. She's 8 years old and was the best dog. Very friendly with our kids and a total mush. I LOVE AB and would totally get another one if it wasn't for the shedding.
