Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
I could really use some support, maybe even advice.
DH and I are currently TTC with the help of a reproductive endocrinologist (I have PCOS, a condition that basically results in very long cycles). The RE has be on different fertility drugs at different points in my cycle.
These medications are working (no, I'm not pregnant yet but I'm responding well to them and my cycle is shorter). However, they do cause weight gain and bloating.
I'm torn because I really want to have kids and know this is the right thing to do. However, I worked hard to get my body the way it is. I feel so gross and bloated. I'm gaining weight while still eating the same things. I just feel awful and have been wearing sweats whenever I can.
I wouldn't mind gaining the weight and actually BEING pregnant!! But I worry that if it takes me a long time I will continue to gain weight and once I do get pregnant I want to be as healthy as I am now and not overweight. So while it is partly a vanity issue, I am also concerned about my health.
Not sure if anyone has gone through something similar as far as gaining weight due to medication. It's a double edge sword for me- I want to get pregnant (and this is the way to do it) but I also don't want to gain a ton of weight pre-pregnancy and hurt my health. And yes there is that vanity issue. I worked VERY hard to lose 60lbs. I want to keep it off! and I don't want to have to buy new clothes (at least until maternity clothes).
Thanks for letting me vent.

I have no advice but can offer some
FWIW, I know a lot of women, even without the f drug issue, who have struggled with the weight gain issue because of pregnancy.
It's very tough.
You are not alone.

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
First off, I wanted to give you .
With regards to the weight gain, have you expressed your concerns to your doctor? You mentioned being bloated. Perhaps that means its all water weight gain? I know a gain is a gain and it's messing with your head right now. But maybe viewing it as that this particular weight gain is temporary and has nothing to do with why you may have gained weight in the past will help? I know how hard you've worked to lose the weight and keep it off. This situation is different and I think changing how you're looking at it might help.
We are all our own worst critics and I can empathize. I just think you need to not be so hard on yourself. We're all here to support you.

Also are you allowed to continue with any form of exercise? I think I remember you posting about this issue in the past and that your doctor frowned upon it.
I also know sometimes doctors frown upon anything they feel could ultimately come back on them if something were to happen.
Maybe doing something less rigorous could help though.
(i.e. yoga, swimming, walking, etc.)

You gotta do what you gotta do! If these drugs make you gain a few lbs but you get a baby out of it, I would say its totally worth it.... and when your done having kids you can work on perfecting your body then. Because pregnancy is going to make you gain weight anyway. Hoping the drugs work quickly for you and there is a pregnancy announcement in the near future!

I'm sorry, it does suck. I gained almost 20lbs with IF drugs trying to get pregnant with DS. I don't think you will continue to gain if you go through multiple cycles with the meds, at least I've never heard of anyone really gaining more than 20lbs. I lost almost 30lbs a few months before IF meds (but I still had another 10-15 to go), and I was VERY upset to gain more than half of that back, so I totally get it. All I can say is keep exercising and eating right, I think a lot of it is water weight and it will come off when you stop the meds. And when you DO get pregnant, you can try to stay gain the lower end of the recommended amount, that way you really won't have much to lose PP. I gained 38lbs and I've lost all of that but am now working on losing what I gained from the meds.
Remember, the end result is completely worth every pound!!!

I agree with this.
I never had to take medications so I can't relate on that end, but I do remember how hard pregnancy was in general. Gaining weight was the hardest thing ever. I felt like you did; I worked so hard to get my body to a certain point that I didn't want to throw everything out the window. I will tell you though that the baby is completely worth EVERYTHING!!!! When I saw my dd face for the first time everything was worth it! And I truly mean that. I would do it 100 times over just to have her in my arms.
And trust me YOU WILL LOSE THE WEIGHT!!! Your active! I'm just like you are and I lost 40 lbs in under 5 months. I'm actually at my pre pregnancy weight (today!! ). It is possible to get your body back! I actually think baby weight is easier to lose that regular weight gain. Don't let people tell you you won't get your body back because I listened to everyone during my pregnancy and shouldn't have. I got my body back and honestly don't think I look much different. I can't really relate with the meds but anything it takes to get pregnant is worth it. I know plenty of people who took medications and lost all the weight and then some. So don't worry so much! You'll be back in those skinny jeans before you know it.
Good luck TTC!!!!

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
I agree with Kristin that even if you do gain the weight, since you're so active now, you'll be able to lose it. Plus, since you already work out regularly, you'll be able to continue working out during most of your prenancy. I gained 20 pounds from a certain BC and it was driving me crazy. Like you said, I was still dieting and working out and the weight just kept coming on. Its very frustrating and I know how hard you work, but I believe it will be so worth it. And then you will be a hot mom!

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
I know this is hard - I only did one cycle of clomid, but I gained weight from it and I was overweight starting so it did not feel great. But I did get pregnant and within 3 weeks, I was down 26 lbs (I only gained 17 lbs during pregnancy so I lost what I gained and the clomid weight - but I did start out overweight so I was not supposed to gain much according to my OB). I gained weight when I went back to work, but that's another story...
My SIL had to do injectibles and took several drugs to get pregnant - I think she gained 10-15 lbs before getting pregnant. She started out underweight, but this was very hard for her. She also had to pretty much give up running. She's expecting a boy next month - I know she's struggling with the weight and inactivity, but I've honestly never seen her so happy.
It's hard, but it's temporary and it's worth it! Good luck!

this is how i see it exactly, i am going through the same thing currently... the gain sucks but if i end up w/ a BFP then its worth it to me.

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
I understand what you are going through. In the next two months, we will (hopefully) be starting IVF. I am nervous about the side effects of the medicine on my body, including possible weight gain. I am in good shape and I know with IVF, exercise is frowned upon during certain times. If I could just get pregnant naturally, I would be more accepting of the weight gain. I just need to keep reminding myself that I do want a baby and this is a necessary evil. My DH and I are both pretty into physical fitness so I figure I will be able to get back into shape. Success stories like the ones above keep me optimistic.

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
Thank you everyone so much for all the support and advice.
It's also hard because I've been having stomach issues lately as well so I've had to take some days off my exercise routine. I'm also finding myself limited as to what I can eat because of it. All these medical issues seem to be hurting me so much.
I really appreciate all of the support I get on here!

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
It is a hard situation. I went through it myself and still trying to lose the weight.
My DD is 9.5 months now. I had gone through 2 miscarriages, and then had to take some meds...all of that had me gain a good 15lbs prior to pregnancy. After a year, I ended up pregnant with my Daughter and gained 40 lbs. I was not allowed to work out through out my pregnany. It was tough bc post partum I had so much weight to lose and my body got so jiggly from not working out.
I still have 30+ lbs I'd like to lose.
Once you do get pregnant it iis all worth it!!!! I will tell you this...even though I had gained all of that weight I LOVED THE WAY I LOOKED pregnant. I dont know why, since I was up so much weight...(but I look back at pictures and loved seeing my belly and I was glowing ).
You will forget about all of the weight gain once you are pregnant with you LO. I promise and you will feel beautiful!!
Also, you have maintained your weight loss for a long time. You already developed healthy eating habits (which will carry over in pregnancy). I ate anything and everything ( which is why i gained 40lbs : )
If you work hard at losing it, most women take the weight off right away. For me my weight loss kind of took a back seat the past 9 months. That's a different story bc I have been so busy with moving twice and buying a home all in this time.
I understand where you are coming from.
But I promise it will all not matter once you get that BFP!!!
Goodluck!!!
One more thing, you may even lose weight after your stop your meds once pregnant. I got extremelty bloated and gained some water weight from the progesterone supp. Once I stopped 12 weeks into pregnany...I lost -5lbs in the first trimester. So that is also something to think about.

Re: Feeling kind of down on myself right now...
I know the weight gain is frustruating but just try your best to maintain your diet. If the weight gain is due to bloating you could try reducing your sodium intake. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to stop the changes the medications are causing to your body. Think of it as the first of many sacrifices you will make for your little one...hopefully your time TTC will be short and soon you will be off all of the medication.

I know its hard, but in the end you will get pregnant and then you will get back on track. I feel part of your pain... I don't have PCOS, but coming off the pill caused me to gain some pounds that I just can't shake and its been really upsetting me too. The funny thing is, we notice and no one else really does. You work so hard... you alwasy look great and you always will because you are so dedicated. I also have IBS, very bad and it interferes with alot of things especially working out, eating, going places, etc. Anytime you need to vent about that, I am here Been dealing with it most of my adult life.
