Can I just vent for a minute? Feeling kind of sad...
Ryan is 2 and half and has a speech delay. He is currently in EI receiving speech and special instruction, each twice a week. He started in March and has made some progress, but no where where he should be for his age.
His re-evaluation is next month and both teachers completed their testing this past week. I started to cry when I read it. Now, in the testing, they ask for him to do things, like point to body parts, point to objects on flashcards, etc. He can do ALL of this.... when he wants. So his testing came back low because he was very stubborn those few sessions. When I saw that his developmental level was at 15-18 months, I was bawling. He is such a SMART boy, and I feel like because he can't vocalize it, he is not looked upon that way.
I never realized how hard this was going to be. I know many of you have toddlers that are little chatter boxes, and sometimes, I so wish I had that. He gets more frustrated than most kids his age because he KNOWS exactly what he wants, but can't tell us, which brings on the frustration.
He tantrums and carries on because he is upset, and I try SOOO hard to figure out what he wants, and it becomes so exhausting/frustrating for DH and me as well.
I feel so stupid for complaining about this, as I know how lucky I am to have the family that I do, but it's just so difficult sometimes to deal with, I want to sit and cry.. which I do.
Sorry to have rambled on. I know there are other moms on here going through the EI process so some of you might understand. It's just so hard sometimes.

Is there any chance they would redo the evaluation? It doesn't seem fair if he was having an off day.

I've said it before, but it is JUST SO HARD to see your child's delays in writing. Remember that this is just a subjective, one moment in time look at him. Treasure all the skills that he does have, and hang in there. You'll never take his development for granted and there is SO MUCH celebrating yet to come as he continues to make progress.
Good Luck!

I am by no means an expert but maybe he is a good candidate to learn sign language. I am not saying that he will never speak, just that he may take to it well and if he can communicate more easily he might not have tantrums.

I am so sorry your son's evaluation didn't go as well as it should have. I can imagine how hard it must be.
I'm here to listen if anytime you need to vent.

Having a speech delay or any delay does not mean your child is not smart. You have to be positive..your child needs some extra help. That is really okay. You are doing what is best for him and that is what matters. HUGS.

Re: Can I just vent for a minute? Feeling kind of sad...
His frustration is coming from his lack of speech. Have you tried using sign language with him? This would probably go against what an EI evaluator would say, but that is what my friend decided to do and then when her son felt that he could communicate, he started to speak.
Some children are just trapped inside their own heads....they need something to bring them out of it! You are a good mother and Ryan is lucky to have you!

Re: Can I just vent for a minute? Feeling kind of sad...
Have you tried taking pictures of his favorite things/staples for the day and letting him give you the picture of the thing he wants? My mom is a speech therapist and did this for two boys I was a nanny for because they were 3 and had no language skills. Well, let me tell you, it cut down on 90% of the tantrums and frustration and after a year of services, they were talking up a storm. I really suggest trying it to give him a sense of empowerment adn control over his day. It really really helps. Hang in there, it's probably better that he scored lower so he continues to receive the services he needs

Re: Can I just vent for a minute? Feeling kind of sad...
Just wanted to say I'm sorry you are so upset. You are doing a great job with him, making sure he gets the help he needs and recognizing his accomplishments. I would talk to them and tell them what you know he can do and see if they can reassess perhaps, or at least they will know the problem isn't that he doesn't recognize the objects they asked him to point out.
And I don't blame you for being upset. We all want an easy life for our children, and it's hard when something isn't going as planned.

Re: Can I just vent for a minute? Feeling kind of sad...
I know it must be frustrating for you, but it will get better. You should yourself because a lot of mothers wouldn't be taking their child for EI and you are. Just wait, you will turn around one day and be amazed at how well he is doing.
I know it might be hard, but do you think signing with him would help? I'm going to try this with my DD because I still can't make out a lot of words, especially when she is crying and having a temper tantrum.
