Adopted a puppy today!

We just adopted a sweet 10 week old lab/hound mix. I haven't had a puppy since I was a kid, so any advice on getting through the first few weeks would be great!! I was planning on not using newspaper and just taking her outside every 30 minutes or so to pee/poop, but NSAL said she can't be outside till she gets her rabies shot which wouldn't be for at least a month. Is that true??

I would just take her in your yard, no walks or anything yet where there could be other dog poop around. I don't see a problem with that at all. That's what I did with my current dog, the one before, and what everyone I've ever known to have a puppy has done.

Re: Adopted a puppy today!

This is generally true. I am a neurotic about my dogs health. But I have to say that with both of my dogs, I did take them in my yard from day one (10 weeks old). I never used paper or pads, b/c I didnt want them to start that habit. Glad I didnt. Works out better that way for the long run.

IF you live in an area where there may be wildlife that could carry rabies or random animals in your yard that you may not know are out there when you take your dog out, I would only take the dog out on a leash. That way if there was an animal in your yard and you didnt know it...you have your dog next to you at all times. Also helps keep them focused on doing their business vs playing.

Also...I did not take them on walks where other dogs would pee or poo. But in your yard should be just fine. The risk is much less if you just stay in your yard. Then when they get their shots, you can start going out with them. I think I didnt start taking mine out where other dogs go until they were about 4 mths (I am pretty sure).

Good luck!

ITA. We did the same thing. We didn't want them to get used to going in the house. They were just fine until they got their shots in a few weeks.
