There are some children who have such severe peanut allergies. Peanut allergies can be so serious. We are not talking about the kids getting an upset stomach from it. We are talking about their airways closing up within minutes of them ingesting or even being in close proximity to any peanut products. It can be LIFE THREATENING.

I am fortunate that my DD's allergy isn't as severe, so I am in a situation where I am OK with her having to sit at a seperate table. Luckily the kids who buy lunch eat there too, since they are peanut free school lunches, so she does have several friends to sit with. Last year in K was a different story, when she hadn't made many school friends yet.

However there are kids whose allergies are much more severe. If I knew that my child's airways could close up and she could struggle to breath wtihin minutes...and that the lunch aides have DOZENS of kids that they are responsible for and might not catch it quick enough to get him/her to the nurse to use their epi pen, then I would be absolutely making a big deal about the school moving towards peanut free.

I can see both sides of the story. I have a VERY picky eater for a daughter. I also have a child with a mild peanut allergy. I don't think it is fair to say that no matter how severe your child's classmates allergy might be, they should still be allowed to bring peanut butter to school bc it is the only thing they will eat. In that case I will say that you need to come up with some creative alternatives and really focus on getting your child to try some new foods. I have a picky eater, I know there are other alternatives. Last year Emily took a thermos with buttered pasta, EVERY day...but it is what we needed to do. You find another alternative that works.

But I think that we all need to be more sensitive to these life-threatening allergies. Wouldn't you hate to hear that a child's airways closed up because they were in proximity to your child who was the one who brought in a peanut product? It is a very real risk.

Very well said.

The Funtainers are GREAT for holding hot food. I often pack chicken, etc. in them, and it stays hot until lunch time.

This is the norm in most schools. We also have a peanut free table.

You are right, the world isn't peanut free, but school should be a "safe place" for these kids. A parent shouldn't have to worry if little Johnny didn't wash his hands after eating a PB sandwich for lunch and touched the same book in the library that an allergic child grabs next and goes into anaphylactic shock. There are alternatives to peanut butter, sun butter, etc.

My child is not allergic, and I used to think much like you....how dare they tell my child what to pack....but when it comes down to the health and safety of another human being in a place they HAVE to be......

I respect the child in my DD's class that is allergic. I read all labels and wash my hands after preparing her PB sandwich and handling her snack. Does it limit her type of snack? Absolutely but we work around it. All I'm saying is that to me it's not fair to segregate the kids that DON'T have an allergy at a seperate table. And as far as getting creative with non peanut butter lunch. My child would not eat. Its as simple as that. I'm just trying to represent the flip side to all of this. As moms, I think we all will agree, safety always comes first. I'm not disputing that.

I don't think your son should be segregated, that is wrong. He should be able to choose a couple of friends whose parents have agreed to adbide by the guidelines.

I think this is a great idea!

I agree with you. For us, it would be a HUGE hardship to be told we are a peanut free school. Thank god we just have a peanut free table.

In all due respect. Buttered pasta would no be an ok lunch with me. It's carbs and fat. I'm not trying to be argumentative here but I wouldn't feel comfortable sending that in.

Buttered pasta wasn't the only thing she was bringing in. I would actually send in way more then I knew she would eat...string cheese, drinkable yogurt, hard boiled eggs, all with hopes that she would eat SOMETHING while she was at school. She was so picky and so against eating almost anything that I sent in. The buttered pasta was at least something. If it weren't for that there would have been a lot of days where she didn't eat anything at all. Luckily she has branched out this school year and we have more variety now.

This is such a fine line. I already WILL NOT send in anything with peanut butter to school (even though its allowed) knowing that dd could potentially put a child at risk. With that I am appalled that the cafeteria continues to serve it to dd. I figure its on them then. They better be careful. PLUS when dd sits with her peanut butter and jelly bought from the cafeteria, they better make sure her hands are clean upon returning to the classroom. The whole secluding children IMO is ridiculous. Stop serving it.

Re: I'm so upset!! ::vent::

My real issue was that the school did not update DS records, nor did they give me the option to say if he was severe enough to sit at a peanut table or with his class. Sad thing is this school has the kids sit alone, I know to protect them but there's got to be a nicer way to treat these kindergarteners! Have them sit with friends or a group, something to let them feel less 'different'. What makes me scared is that the school didn't look at his update so what ab the kids who have a new allergy and were overlooked? I just think the school needs a better game plan for these kids that respects both sides!

Re: I'm so upset!! ::vent::

That is terrible that your little one was so isolated like that Chat Icon I am glad that was figured out.

My DD's school is peanut free through 4th grade. In addition, her class has dairy and egg allergies that limits the snack lists for the year.

I understand that it limits some of the meals that I send in for lunch, but because I understand what a horrible situation that it can create if an allergic kid has a severe reaction. This is a different world that we live in and it's not fair to isolate the children for something that they have no control over.

The isolation part I agree with. It shouldnt have happened. The determination of whether it was severe enough to me is questionable. I dont blame the school for making it as severe as they wanted to knowing he had this allergy. To me its better safe then sorry. I definitely would be mad if they sat your son with my dd while she ate PB and jelly while they decided how severe it was. To me the dr who writes the paperwork to the school needs to clarify better.

Bread is carbs, and peanut butter has more fat than butter.

I just feel there should be better communication all around over this and I agree with you on the Drs part. Then maybe the schools wouldn't feel so limited. I just wish they spoke to me about this issue and allowed me and the dr to inform them ab his blood levels. Many schools have this option.

. Ok you really want to go tit for tat on this issue, huh? The bread I send my child in with has 22 grams of whole grains(ok you can send whole wheat pasta because I know you'd probably challenge me with that) but let's get real....butter compared to peanut butter?? No butter substitute is going to compare in fiber and protein to peanut butter. Fat from a nut and fat from butter are VERY different. And there's always reduced fat peanut butter, still not equivalent in nutrition to buttered pasta anyway you look at it, sorry.

I believe they make a butter out there now with omega 3's and a whole host of healthy stuff Chat Icon

I'm not going to go back and forth with you, but the point was, in a PB free school, you find something alternative to pack. You make it work for the safety of another human being. Your child can get fiber and protein from another source, or in the other two meals out of the day.

You don't know if the previous poster packed yogurt or milk to get protein, etc. I think it was off base to slam her food choice because you are so hung up on your child having peanut butter.

. I didn't slam her choice. You might want to re read it Chat Icon She's a big girl and can speak for herself if she had a problem with my statement. And as I stated above, I already deal with a pb allergy in my childs classroom. I very much respect the other child and their allergy. To imply that I would not care for the safety of a child is just silly and untrue. Have a good night. To the OP- I'm sorry this post took a turn and I wish you luck with your sons situation!Chat Icon
