Crate/ Exercise Pen

I am adopting a puppy in a couple of weeks. I already have a crate for him but was wondering if an indoor excercise/playpen would also be a good idea to get for him. I have a 2.5 year old daughter and figured when they need a break from each other I could put him in there. Or should I just put him in the crate when they need a break from each other. Space is kind of tight in my house so I want to get it only if it really would be a necessity.

This is a picture of the one I am considering getting.

Do you already know what breed you are getting and how big it will get? We have a big dog and a big crate that she actually likes to go in but she can't really move around much in it. But we don't have kids yet so we never leave her in there for long. If you think you'll need to keep the dog and your DD separated for long periods of time, the exercise pen might be nice so the dog can move around a little.

I've never seen one like that, I'd be concerned how sturdy it is? Puppies like to jump and kids like to climb..I'd look into it further to make sure it's sturdy enough. Do you have a hallway or something you could block off for the dog if you don't want a crate? I have a bulldog and although he's super friendly he could take anyone out when he dodges across a room. He has a large plastic crate that he sleeps in and loves it.

We are getting a maltese/shih tzu mix I'm guessing he won't get bigger than 15 pounds. The crate I got for him is one that my parents used for a 25 pound dog. So it will be roomy but I know in the beginning I have to put in a divider so he won't go in one corner and sleep in the other.
I could block off the kitchen, I don't have any hallways that I could block off. I guess maybe the crate will work out good, if I need to put him in the kitchen for a little while I will make sure it's after he has been outside and went.
Thanks for the feedback, I truly appreciate it.

Re: Crate/ Exercise Pen

I would not get the exercise pen- If the dog needs a break I would put him in his crate.
