Puppy nipping?

Does anyone know how to get a puppy to stop nipping/biting ALL the time??? Other than saying "No!"? Thanks!

Re: Puppy nipping?

I use to say No and hold her muzzle shut while saying it and then hand her a chew toy

It was all about repetition. Depending on the age of the puppy, their attention span is quite short and don't even know what no is for a while.

Make a yelping sound or say ouch really loud then turn away from the pup and give no attention. If they try to come in front of you keep turning away. Once they are being better, then give attention. Be consitent and it will pay off. I promise it will get better though and your pup will stop. Good Luck!

Ditto. Also, don't give them attention if they are being mouthy. If you're playing with them and they put their mouth on you, stop what you're doing immediately and ignore the dog. It's going to take a long time for them to really change their habits, but stick with it. My pit mix was so bad with this when we first got her and now she NEVER puts her mouth on people, except to lick them of course. We're trying to get her to stop that, too, but sometimes you can't help but think it's cute. Chat Icon

Agree! This is what our trainer recommended and it worked like a charm. I would wait until the puppy has all four paws on the ground or at least has stopped nipping at you (or your clothing!) And as other poster said, consistency is key. Esp if you have other family members - you want them ALL to do the same as you so puppy learns it's not acceptable to nip/ mouth anyone at all. If they get to nip/ mouth occasionally the message won't be as clear to the pup

I've heard that putting a little bitter apple spray on your hands before you handle your dog in a way that might encourage nipping could help though not sure what it would do to your hands. I personally would try RadioLau's suggestion first.

Puppys are awesome but so much work!

ETA - how old is the puppy? he might be teething which exacerbates it. my dog liked this thing called the chilly bone. i got it at petco i think. you put it in freezer and then they can chew on it and it's hard-ish and cools their gums. Maybe have a chilly bone on hand and when puppy stops nipping reward him with the chilly bone. just ideas...
