Re: cameras

Canon Rebel XS. I'm new at photography, too, and this is a great starter camera. The price is right and it still takes beautiful photos. HTH!

Re: cameras

Sony Alpha A35, Pentax K-r or Canon Rebel T3

All are APS-C sensors, have video capabilities and offer a live view on the LCD screen. The Pentax and the Sony have image stabilization built in, the Canon you have to buy lenses with IS in them ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$).

I have a Minolta 5D and a Sony Alpha a580 with the built in stabilization and I am able to take low light photos hand held that normally would require a tripod because of it. I also am able to use all of the old Minolta A mount glass out there on my camera plus newer Carl Zeiss lenses.

People always forget about Sony(they bought Minolta's camera line) and Pentax, even Olympus when looking into DSLRs, but don't discount them because they aren't Nikon or Canon. They have some great cameras out. They also tend to offer a bit more features on their cameras at a lower price point than the Canon/Nikon systems.
Here's some reviews of them.

DP Review: Canon Rebel T3

Re: cameras

The Canon Rebel is a great camera, especially for the price. I learned on my mom's Rebel and it took fabulous quality pictures!
