So unhappy…..
I was doing so well with my diet and exercise program. I even lost 8.5 pounds in about 3 weeks. I was going to the gym at least 5 days a week. I would often use the treadmill. At first I was just walking, then eventually running at times. Last week I managed to complete 3 1/2 miles. BUT…now my knee is killing me. It hurts so much to just walk on it so running is impossible. I work on my feet for 8 hours a day so I can't rest it all day. I have been living on advil and icing it at night.
Does anyone have any advice? I would hate to go back to my old ways and gain the weight back. TIA

Don't get discouraged! If you continue to follow the diet portion of your plan, you should have no problem continuing to lose..that is actually the biggest part where weight loss is concerned.
What's weird is that I actually start losing faster when i'm not going to the gym as much, and thats probably from losing some muscle mass.
With that being said, because I know you want to keep up the running (Which is awesome!!)...definitely listen to your body. If your knee hurts to even walk on right now, i would see a doctor. You don't want to have a stress fracture. Or you can give it a few more days and see...but obviously do NOT force yourself to run on it..worst thing you can do if you're in that much pain. Sometimes its the IT band that runs on the side of the knee cap...can be very painful. I damaged mine after my first half marathon and it took 3 weeks to feel normal to where i could run again. But i didn't need anything other than time and NSAIDS (advil, actually motrin is best!!)
If in a few days your knee is back to OK, start out walking and gradually incorporate a mile here and there with the running but stop as SOON as there is any pain.
In the meantime you can do some weight training which is excellent for you and will help build some muscle which will burn calories throughout the day...nothing that involves too much bending of course, but a lot of the stationery machines at the gym would be good...and everyone says swimming, because there is no pressure on joints but i don't swim so no advice there!
Good luck..don't get discouraged. You should be fine!!

Re: So unhappy…..
Where is it bothering you? What part hurts?
I have IT band syndrome in both knees. I used to run 7+ miles a day and then my knees started to bother me. I started strength training my legs and now have no trouble. I also use a foam roller every leg workout and cardio workout. Make sure to foam roll your quads, hams, glutes and especially your IT band! It will REALLY help.

Re: So unhappy…..
Thank you both so much. It really is just so frustrating. It hurts on the inside of my knee at the bottom of my knee cap. I am definitely going o try some strength training and see if it helps. Thanks again for the encouragement.

Re: So unhappy…..
I would try switching to the elliptical machine for a few weeks in addition to strength training and stretching.

Re: So unhappy…..
I was having pain in my knee from the treadmill as well so I started doing the bike, and found that I get a good workout without the impact.

Re: So unhappy…..
I have taken the past few days off and my knee is finally starting to feel a bit better. I also spoke to a vendor I work with who is also a personal trainer and she gave me some tips so hopefully I won't do this again. Thanks again everyone for the support.

Re: So unhappy…..
I am by no means a runner, however, there are lots of ladies that go to the (hot) yoga studio I attend who are former runners, who had hurt themselves at one point or another.
This is definitely a form of exercise I highly recommend, if only to change up your routine several times a week.

I would love to do hot yoga. They just opened up a studio right near my house. Unfortunately I suffer from vertigo at times and I don't think it would be a great idea for me at this point. But thanks for the suggestion.

Re: So unhappy…..
You've definitely gotten the right advice from other posters. I just also wanted to add that you should make sure you are wearing the right running shoes for you and how you run. If you've not already done so, go to a specialty store like Runner's Edge and they will actually watch you run, talk to you about your goals and make recommendations.
Don't give up!
