Dog bald spot- could it be stress?

I just noticed a bald spot on my dog's back. She is a 3 year old shih tzu and has never had any health problems. I am wondering if this bald spot could be due to stress. I just had a baby last month, and up until then, my dog was my baby. To add, she has always been afraid of thunder, but it seems to have gotten worse.I have the vet on Sunday but just wanted some feedback before then because I'm nervous. Thanks in advance.

I know in cats it can be stress/OCD. They will pick themselves bald, so it may be the same in dogs.

Is it a spot she can reach and lick? I know my dog has a tendency to lick at hot spots until he's bald and raw. We just have to keep an eye on him and tell him firmly "No." when we catch him. He's much better about it now.

This

But if that's not the case - Yes. They can get bald spots from stress. My little one is a very anxious dog. He has quite a few and also has a receding hairline - little old man

It's not in the spot where the flea treatment goes is it? There was an investigation into Frontline and others because dogs were being burned by them.

My first dog had them from biting himself because he was itchy. We changed foods to something fish based, limited grains, and add fish oil to his food. All those things cleared it up for us.

Good luck at the vet, hope it's nothing serious. Chat Icon

That is so weird. I had a baby 4 months ago and my Pom got two bald patches on his flanks around te time of her birth. We also thought he was stressed because he is the anxious type.

Anyway, the vet tested his thyroid and that wasn't an issue. He said it was most likely seasonal flankel (sp?) alopecia. Basically basically the dog gets bald patches when the season changes and it might or might now grow back :(

We were so sad since our Pom has gorgeous fur but are happy to see that it is growing back! Chat Icon

Hope urs is nothing either! I do believe stress played a part in my dogs case because of the baby and now he is adjusted but of course that's just my opinion Chat Icon

My bulldog has seasonal alopecia and when the seasons change, he gets a couple bald spots. They last a few weeks and then fill in nicely.

He also gets hot spots every year and loses some hair, but theres a clear difference in the two.

Bring it up to the vet next time you go.
