nyc maternity leave question
So I just went to a workshop and am a little confused about insurance.
If I am going out for the year..she told me to do FMLA(just insurance) and then childcare leave (nada) in which case I will be going onto my husbands insurance after FMLA runs out.
So does the baby go onto my insurance via FMLA? She said to put the baby directly under my husband's insurance but I don't get why I would pay when I can insure the baby under my own for the next 6 weeks.. I'm confused...what did u guys do?

Re: nyc maternity leave question
There is something called SLOAC (Special Leave of Absence Coverage) which goes into effect when your FMLA runs out. I had to go out earlier than planned, so I needed 14 weeks. I had to use SLOAC for two weeks (meanwhile the DOE dropped me during my FMLA time, and I'd added DD to my insurance. Just a heads up of what could happen.)

I would make sure you know when enrollment is on your husbands insurance. It's not a big deal to add your child but to enroll you is sometimes only done at certain times of the year.
And also it may not be that much to add baby to your husbands. I know DH works a school also so it costs more to add 1 or more to his insurance plan so once I was on it was no extra for DS

It's been awhile since I went to my conference, but I didn't think everyone is eligible for SLOAC? Doesn't it run concurrently with FMLA?

When I took leave (and it was five years ago so things may have changed) I am pretty sure SLOAC and FMLA were not concurrent. I remember thinking it was kind of silly to have to fill out so much paperwork for what was two weeks of coverage- I took 14 weeks of maternity leave.

Re: nyc maternity leave question
From what I understand FMLA only covers you for 12 weeks and that includes your 6 weeks of maternity that the DOE gives you. Once the 12 weeks are up they drop you from insurance- therefore your baby would not be insured. I think the lady conducting the meeting says to have your baby under husband because of any gaps that may occur and saving you the hassil of doing a lot of paper work.

right but..my husband is under my insurance..so wouldnt that mean losing 12 weeks of paid insurance for all of us..switching to my husbands is going to cost money for all of us..FMLA is paid for...thats why i'm confused.

You will take fmla for 12 weeks. For those 12 weeks you will maintain your health insurance for all those covered your plan. I'm assuming you have GhI in which the city provides to you at no cost. You can go to your husbands Insurance after that, I would just make sure you find out about how your DHs Insurance works So that as soon as those 12 weeks are up you are then covered on his.

Technically, I covered DD until FMLA ran out, and then all of us went under DH's plan. Frankly, the DOE is a little dumb when it comes to paperwork. It took 6 MONTHS, a few dozen faxes, and an equal amount of phone calls before they (retroactively) covered her. I was ticked.
DH and I made this decision to save some money (his family plan is far more expensive than the DOE's) but in hindsight, we should've just coughed up the money and saved ourselves the aggravation.
If that's not an option, make sure the hospital you're delivering in gives you something typed on letterhead stating the baby's name and DOB, and send that along with your FMLA paperwork to the DOE as soon as you get home from the hospital. When the baby's birth cert comes in, send that too.
