Private Kindergarten question
DS is going to a private kindergarten (in his daycare center). We received a note that NYS mandates an absence note if he isn't there.
I didn't think NYS had any say since its a private school. Is there a way to find out about it? Its not a big deal to write a note but I didn't think the school had any NYS affiliation except being licensed.
Do they get money for NYS for having kids in this class?
I'm just a bit.
TIA

Re: Private Kindergarten question
I thought stuff like vaccinations, having a certain number of days of school, etc... were NYS mandated, regardless of private vs. public school.

Private Kindergarten question
i think it has to do with the license or something similar
because in catholic school you had to bring in a note for your absences otherwise detention and they stated it was a requirement of the state

Re: Private Kindergarten question
I do not know about the note specifically but the private school definitely has many regulations to follow. Even to call themselves Kindergarten I believe they need some sort of curriculum approval.

Private Kindergarten question
I taught Kindergarten at a private school and the attendance record is sent to the state with parent notes to explain absences. You don't have to send your child to pre-K but Kindergarten is state mandated. Be sure the note says illness or a family situation rather than a vacation or other 'illegal absence.'

Private Kindergarten question
This is the first year that kindergarten is mandatory in NYS, so there may be stricter rules.

Where did you hear this? There was a bill proposed earlier this year to make 5 the mandatory age for school, however, that bill set the law to take effect in 2015 statewide.

Re: Private Kindergarten question
My son is in K (public) and we got a letter about absences too. My older son never got that letter for K and I'm pretty sure we didn't send in a note the one day he was out that year.
Maybe NYS said that schools should start keeping records now to make the transition easier?

Re: Private Kindergarten question
I never went to public school, and my kids don't either (they are in a Catholic school), but for as long as I can remember, I as a child needed to have an Absence note when I returned to school or I was not allowed to be in school (when I was younger in both grammar and HS, you had to sit in the guidance office). I know the rule is the same for my kids now - a note is required when they go back. Not sure if there are consequences if they don't bring one (like when I was younger).... Luckily, the one time my kids were absent, I sent them in with a note the next day.
Ok here is what is printed in the school handbook of my kids school:
"School" has adapted the NYS Department of Education Law 3205 for successful school completion and to ensure the adequate maintenance of records verifying attendance.
It goes on to say when attendance is taken, that you must call the school before 9 am when they are absent or the school will call to track you down, a note is required upon returning to school, and that a doctors note is required then the child is out for more than 3 consecutive days.
It lists excused and unexcused absences. (wont type out but can if anyone is interested).
For the elementary school grades (K-6), 15 absences per trimester or 45 for the whole year will deny the student credit for that year.
Middle school (7-8 th grade), it is 10 absences per trimester or 30 per year.
