Re: appetizer party
The mini meatballs in the slow cooker with the grape jelly/chili sauce are so easy and such a crowd pleaser.
I try to do a lot of things I can make ahead or things that can just be assembled, and vary heavy v. light food, hot v. cold. Here are other ideas:
I make baked clams (can be done ahead)... I recently posted the recipe on the baked clams thread.
I always do a cold shrimp platter, either shrimp cocktail or shrimp marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, lemon zest and fresh parsley.
A cheese platter (a few different kids of cheeses, grapes or apples or pears, maybe some dried fruit, nuts, etc.).
An antipasto platter (italian meats, olives, roasted peppers, breadsticks)
Spinach dip in a breadbowl (I like the Knorr's vegetable soup recipe for something quick and popular). Serve with veggies, bread cubes, crackers.
Stuffed mushrooms (I have a recipe for sausage stuffed mushrooms)
Cheese puffs (I make one with gruyere that can be made in advance and frozen) or brie bites (brie, raspberry jam, and a pecan half in mini phyllo cups).
Pigs in blankets are always popular.
I think Trader Joe's has some very good frozen appetizers.

appetizer party
My sister makes these amazing Polynesian style meatballs with green bell pepper and pineapple.
I am hosting a party next week and this is my menu:
Pizza Puffs: Biscuits stuffed with pepperoni and cheese with marinara for dipping
Pigs in a blanket
Chips, salsa and guacamole
Potato chips with onion dip
Miniature sliders on potato buns with assorted toppings
French onion tartlets
Crudites with dip
Macaroni and cheese in martini glasses
Fruit and cheese platter
Antipasto skewers (assorted Italian meats and cheese with balasmic dipping sauce)
Potstickers
Southwestern egg rolls with avocado ranch dipping sauce
Shrimp cocktail
Bacon wrapped scallops
Meat candy
And then a dessert bar with milk and cookie martinis, mini banana splits and brownies.
